By the time you read this, I’ll be on a plane there. So here’s something for your reading pleasure. Happy Holidays, I’ll try to check in from time to time.
• The entire Egyptian cabinet offered to resign, as protests against military rule continue. Juan Cole has a good summation. We could see Mohammed ElBaradei appointed Prime Minister in a government of national unity.
• Initially the claim was that $600 million in depositor money had gone missing from MF Global. Now it’s up to $1.2 billion. And rising, I assume. Brad DeLong has the official statement from MF Global.
• Republicans are promoting Simpson-Bowles now? Do they know anything about it? It has even more tax increases than what Obama proposed!
• Spencer Ackerman on Leon Panetta’s long war against reverting the defense budget back to 2007 levels.
• At least Occupy LA and Occupy Philly get to negotiate with the authorities before getting kicked out of their encampments. Meanwhile, the march from Occupy Wall Street to DC has been completed.
• Mitt Romney’s first ad of the Presidential election takes Barack Obama egregiously out of context.
• Germany continues to resist the only efforts that would prevent a collapse of the Eurozone. This time they don’t want the tighter fiscal integration that would come with Eurobonds.
• Pennsylvania gives up on its scheme to subvert the Electoral College. They ought to just throw in with the National Popular Vote.
• Joe Nocera is pretty good today on the FDA’s nixing of Avastin.
• The Administration is using its power under the Affordable Care Act to encourage a health insurer to reconsider a rate hike. Under the law they can’t unilaterally block it, which is a flaw of the law. But shaming has actually worked in the past.
• The parties appear to agree on cutting farm payments, but that was left at the wayside of an abandoned Super Committee deal. Will it get put into a farm bill now?
• The New Yorker profiles Kalle Lasn and Micah White of Adbusters, and their role in generating Occupy Wall Street.
• And my Silvio Berlusconi obsession just goes and goes. Thankfully, he only wrote the love songs.

About FDL News Desk
Department of English, UC Davis, Calls for the Immediate Resignation of Chancellor Katehi
One of their untenured assistant professors bravely called for Katehi’s resignation a few days ago,
and now the department is backing him up. Good for them.
Most Pennsylvania and U.S. voters want a national popular vote for President.
A survey of 800 Pennsylvania voters conducted on December 16-17, 2008 showed 78% overall support for a national popular vote for President.
Support was 87% among Democrats, 68% among Republicans, and 76% among independents.
By age, support was 77% among 18-29 year olds, 73% among 30-45 year olds, 81% among 46-65 year olds, and 78% for those older than 65.
By gender, support was 85% among women and 71% among men.
The National Popular Vote bill would guarantee the Presidency to the candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states (and DC).
Every vote, everywhere, would be politically relevant and equal in presidential elections.
When the bill is enacted by states possessing a majority of the electoral votes– enough electoral votes to elect a President (270 of 538), all the electoral votes from the enacting states would be awarded to the presidential candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states and DC.
In Gallup polls since 1944, only about 20% of the public has supported the current system of awarding all of a state’s electoral votes to the presidential candidate who receives the most votes in each separate state (with about 70% opposed and about 10% undecided). Support for a national popular vote is strong among Republicans, Democrats, and Independent voters, as well as every demographic group in virtually every state surveyed in recent polls in closely divided Battleground states: CO – 68%, FL – 78%, IA 75%, MI – 73%, MO – 70%, NH – 69%, NV – 72%, NM– 76%, NC – 74%, OH – 70%, PA – 78%, VA – 74%, and WI – 71%; in Small states (3 to 5 electoral votes): AK – 70%, DC – 76%, DE – 75%, ID – 77%, ME – 77%, MT – 72%, NE 74%, NH – 69%, NV – 72%, NM – 76%, OK – 81%, RI – 74%, SD – 71%, UT – 70%, VT – 75%, WV – 81%, and WY – 69%; in Southern and Border states: AR – 80%,, KY- 80%, MS – 77%, MO – 70%, NC – 74%, OK – 81%, SC – 71%, TN – 83%, VA – 74%, and WV – 81%; and in other states polled: CA – 70%, CT – 74%, MA – 73%, MN – 75%, NY – 79%, OR – 76%, and WA – 77%. Americans believe that the candidate who receives the most votes should win.
The bill has passed 31 state legislative chambers in 21 small, medium-small, medium, and large states. The bill has been enacted by 9 jurisdictions possessing 132 electoral votes– 49% of the 270 necessary to bring the law into effect.
NationalPopularVote
In Pennsylvania, the National Popular Vote bill has been introduced in both the House (HB 1270) and Senate (SB 1116)
Have a great Thanksgiving, David! Be sure to pig out on the turkey so you’ll get lots of tryptophan-induced rest and relaxation.

And speaking of turkeys: As the headlines blare U.S. Debt Rating Faces Cut ,
Mr. Market flips the bird to the rating agencies:
10 year Treasuries at 1.94%, 5 years at 0.87%, a record low.

RE: Leon Panetta’s long war against reverting the defense budget back to 2007 levels.
He won’t be the next Secretary of Defense to strip the US of robust defensive capability! Lest he be bounced out on his ear. The CIA-Pentagon Junta won’t tolerate it.
Some great news on the death penalty front. The Oregon governor says he won’t sign off on any more executions, including one scheduled for next month, because he’s troubled that the last two people he killed and the one coming up all dropped their appeals and asked to be executed.

Relatedly, an interesting opinion piece in the NYT as to whether the Presidential turkey pardon is in poor taste in light of the fact that the US has more people on death row as the rest of the Western world combined.

If Katehi was as good at preventing police brutality as she is at covering her own ass, the events of November 18 would never have happened. A lot of people are starting to forget that she sent in the police with the only parameter being to “avoid violence if possible.” The university made a statement today saying that the police have “wide latitude” in these situations. Well, who the hell would give the police wide latitude in one of the most delicate situations a campus police faces?
So the university has now appointed ex-LAPD chief William Bratton to head a blue-ribbon commission. Bratton is not known as politicians’ favorite policeman for nothing. Katehi needs to go, and the management of the UCD police needs to be purged, and THEN and investigation should be undertaken, chaired by someone who has credibility with the protesters. In my opinion President Yudal should resign as well, but one thing at a time.

Gee, and I thought he only did the love!
“. . .The Administration is using its power under the Affordable Care Act to encourage a health insurer to reconsider a rate hike. Under the law they can’t unilaterally block it, which is a flaw of the law. But shaming has actually worked in the past. . .”
—————————–
The ACA is not a prerequisite for shaming the last time I checked. 1st Amdt would take care of that, no?
And so it is with so many other bon bons in ACA which can swim on their own if/when the mandate goes down. No doubt there already plans on the shelf in case that happens next year. Otherwise they’ll be unprepared.
But wait, there’s more!
Berlusconi trial: Clooney can be called
During the interim while NPV is collecting states, but before the 270 vote tipping point is reached, will states signing on assign electors by NPV criteria, i.e., in 2012?
Or will actually applying NPV anywhere have to wait until NPV obtains 270?
Where is Corzine??? Why has he not been arrested? What a farce we live in.
Seems if you look at most POTUS pardons the recipients are always their favorite turkeys. IMO we should do away with POTUS pardon, at best it should be that the can demand a case be reopened.
Spending it like crazy

Been thinking over and over of Obama’s response to the human microphone yesterday. It’s obvious the man is a political actor on the level of Reagan. Saying “it’s okay, it’s okay” repeatedly to the crowd with a calm smile on his face–pretending to welcome dissent. At the same time, refusing to even acknowledge who the demonstrators were or what they stood for and plodding on with his prearranged talk. There’s a subtle cruelty to that type of reaction. This whole episode very well may have been a set up, with plants in the audience starting the chant of “Obama, Obama”. Basically, Obama tried to dissipate an entire huge movement (OWS) through a deft speaking performance. Same as he has done since the 2008 campaign. It’s obvious, also, from the slickness of his reaction, that Obama and his advisers have spent a lot of thought on how to crush OWS most effectively.
He’s a bad man.
M$&^%$ F#%^*ers Global
“He’s a bad man.” A bad man who is using American taxpayer money to bail out Europe.
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-11-22/imf-revamps-credit-lines-for-nations-facing-shocks-on-europe-debt-turmoil.html
The IMF, which is controlled by the U.S., is going to give billions to Greece, Italy and Spain, even though it won’t do any good and everybody knows it. And 17% of the IMF money comes from the American taxpayer. EuroTARP.
Just a drive by this morning. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone and especially to the occupiers. Have a safe holiday. We are the 99%.
Jon Corzine is MF Global. MotherFucking Global. 1.2 billion missing. Maybe it’s under the desk. EmmEff Global. WTF? You couldn’t write a better farce.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, popeye!
I like it.
And IMF: International Mother Fuckers.
Mornin’, pups
I’m thinking of starting a morning diary to replace Swim. Anybody interested?

I think a lot of the kids are downstairs.
Do you need to ask? Of course. Lots more time involved…

Absolutely. I’d be there.
It’s a little confusing the way it is now. I don’t know where to be. Ha.
Just let us know. Then, we can all meet there.
Great idea, SD.
Yes
I think that’s a great idea! Of course I’m interested. I also offered to be one of the hosts of a rotating PUAC. This would be fun!
We could help you.
I see demi, ruth, msmolly and eCAHN so I left the comment there too.
Far out. I’ll work it out afore Friday.
Good morning, everyone.

Good morning, and happy Thanksgiving wishes to all you freedom lovers. I love you all, in the most deeply spiritual way. And to SD, if you’ve got the devotion, and the coffee is good, I’ll be there, amigo.
Sometimes my brain works in the a.m. *g*
Great to have you here.
That’s a keeper, popyeye!!!
;~DW
I think it’s more than that (or maybe less). Obama has got a first-rate temperament, as was said of FDR. He doesn’t take offense, which is one of his strengths. It’s also a weakness, because it lets the Republicans and Netanyahu walk all over him in public without his reacting. The other thing is that the bubble he lives in must is made of plexi-glass. Once he has made up his mind about something, he is as impervious to facts as the most rabid T-bagger. An odd combination, and in the end I think, tragic for him. Even with all his talent, it must be tough coming up into the big time as a black man.
O.K. I know I’m making excuses for him. It doesn’t alter the judgment that he is an utter failure as President.
Have a wonderfull Holiday, ’99.
Thank you sir.
I’m savin’ you a seat
Same to you man. You stay safe.
All’s Groovy. You too? I’m betting yes.
I’m in. If you want help, I’ve a few hours a week to spare.
Boxturtle (I miss BT *sob*)
Can we each bring our favorite mug?
Has a nice ring to it, no?
I generally try to avoid psychoanalyzing Obama but, especially if you read Suskind’s book, the conclusion seems unavoidable that Obama was completely overwhelmed when he assumed the presidency so he turned to the status quo — rich white people — for comfort. And the rest, alas, is history.
I forgot to give my best good morning to the pups. We’re having our first snow today, and it looks like ‘Over the meadows and through the woods, to grandmother’s house we go.’ A real New England Thanksgiving. Hope all of you will be having a good one, and drive carefully.
Nothin’ fancy. 4-5 news links and a comic strip and we’re off and runnin’.
You, too. Come for coffee soon.
We could do one link and be off and running. Like we would stay on topic anyway. *g*
And, also, since you asked, see my #38 of the previous thread. I left a comment you might get a kick out of.
Breakfast Buffet

Occupy Philly gets to negotiate with Mayor Nutter who offers them two options: have the oppupation end at Dilworth Plaza or have it end at Paine Plaza.
Gee thanks, mayor. The once-popular Michael Nutter is showing his true colors — just another tool of the ruling class.
It’s not talkin’ he wants to do to you….lol
It’s what Uncle Toms do.
Hi ya, honey. Gotta go get ready to go to the Other Kitchen. :)
Nah, there ain’t gonna be no Dragon in the title. *g*
You’re making tough times a lot more bearable for a lot of people.
((demi))
Or sometimes, just a cartoon or a video.
Should we clear it with Jane? We have to get that 8 a.m. timeslot.
Good morning, Knut. Brilliant sunshine here in NW Indiana after all-day rain yesterday. No snow (we had snow on Nov. 10th).
I gotta bail, way behind at work, but can’t leave without a tune.
Hide and Seek
Be good to yourselves, and all other living things
Namaste
Never. Give. Up.
It’s gonna be at MyFDL so I don’t think I need Jane’s okay. I don’t see it becoming front page material.
Don’t underestimate your power. *g*
I just thought it could replace Swim on the front page, so David doesn’t have to get his roundup in the queue quite so early. But sure, start it at MyFDL and see where it goes. I’ll be there and will help!
Edit to add: I can email Jane if you like. Tell her some morning pups want to put up a replacement for Swim. See what she thinks. I know BT’s departure left a hole, since he also did a noontime post.
I will lend a hand as well if you need me.
Ice Cat Desert
Well, some of us might be draggin’ our assets a wee bit at the ungodly hour yer planning on openin’ fer business … depending on how uproarious “things” have been the daze before, and all that there stuff … and that late-night crowd, well, I suspect they might occassionally stay up late (or is it “early?) just ta get a cuppa and a headstart on what’s shakin’ a whole lot of …
Yer menu sounds real good, btw, SD.
Now, I’m gonna go look at demi’s earlier, other thread comment …

Have a Happy Thanksgiving.
Seems perfect to me.

ohmmm
SD,
What a great idea!
I was just going to check and see what was happening this morning and not comment because i have a lot of pre-Thanksgiving errands to run but your idea is such a good one, I just had to say a big YES!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone. This is such a great community and now SD is going to build a bigger house.
We morning swimmers,(been coming since Scarecrow days)
do NOT need the nested comments of MyFDL and I think Jane would welcome a committment for the 8AM slot.
Box Turtles comments to the links are priceless, btw
Happy Thanksgiving to all the pups.
After 2 1/2 years of doing Caturday I’m pretty used to the nested comments. Still don’t like ‘em, but I’m used to ‘em. At least they’re not the nightmare they are at DKos.
I’m with JClausen. I think Jane would welcome a regular commitment for the Swim time slot. I think she’s pretty happy with reader involvement. She told me once that having more of that at FDL is a goal.
But since it’s your idea (I had thought of it too, but hadn’t said anything yet), you decide how you want to do it and let us know.
*bows*
I agree about the nested comments. Hate ‘em, hate ‘em more than anything else at FDL.
May All have a happy, politically correct, non-sectarian holiday season!
Boxturtle (h/t to Mark Russsel)
Good analysis. And I would add this–it is interesting to analyze Obama, but the main problem is with the entire Democratic party. I was always a Democrat, even though considering the party way too right wing, because of its progressive element. Now the progressive wing has been obliterated, and the party speaks in a monolithic corporatist lock step, with Obama as its talented spokesperson. The silence of the so-called “progressive” Democrats concerning OWS is deafening. Apparently, they are operating under top-down orders to not even acknowledge the movement. (As an example, “progressive” Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky was nowhere to be seen at a big march in her district in support of Occupy). Obama’s shunning of the movement at yesterday’s speech thus was typical of the party as a whole.
Well, let’s see if it flies on its own first.
I find replacing “Obama” with (Charles) Manson or (Ted) Bundy helps with the objectivity of any statement about him.
See?
Manson is of course a light weight comparatively.
Agreed.
Back at you, friend.
Next to you, I hope. I promise not to drool. In return, will you promise to remove any cat hairs from my coffee lol?
Joe Nocera is terrible on Avastin. We can have a legitimate debate about the effectiveness of Avastin, which is definitely in dispute, but let’s not kid ourselves. The FDA is being influenced by the cost-cutters in Washington, and is not making these decisions based only upon comparative effectiveness.
The mainstream media, the Washington establishment, and deficit hawks are all obsessed with the idea of depriving Americans of expensive drugs and medical treatments. Their single-minded obsession with cutting health care costs has led them to argue for cutting treatment for the aged and sick, for encouraging patients to talk to their doctor about how to die with dignity… in other words it has led them to promote the idea that old people should die sooner. This dovetails with their incessant whining about the aging of the population and Social Security costs, as if the fact that Americans are staying healthy and living longer than ever before wasn’t a good thing.
Yes. Of course I will. It’s what friends do.
((OmAli))
I wish the very happiest of Thanksgivings to you and yours. And Rod the goat, of course. ;-)
I think that’s a great idea. Can you contact us.
SD — seriously, contact Jane about this: http://firedoglake.com/contact/
It’d probably be easiest to just arrange to give you access to FDL itself for a morning diary. Talk it over with Jane; I think she’d like the idea.
From our perspective here at FDL, 0 is an utter failure. From the repug perspective, even though they disparage and disrespect, and disdain him, the repug ‘leadership’ really thinks he is a success. 0 has pulled them back from the brink of destruction and made them the more powerful part of the monoparty, as well as nearly destroying the dim party. In fact, if 0 gets another term, he will probably complete the mission. As someone said, the repugs don’t want to win the presidency in ’12 so they have put up this assemblage of nothings. The repugs will be ready to take over in ’16 so this is probably the last time we will see a dim pres.
Now, I want to say to all HAPPY THANKSGIVING.

The National Popular Vote bill does not go into effect until enacted by states with 270 electoral votes.
Back at ya BC :)
