The Susan G. Komen for the Cure denied funding for breast cancer screenings to Planned Parenthood today, in an anti-abortion frenzy designed to hurt the women’s health provider. The effect was a glancing blow. In the past 24 hours, 6,000 donors have delivered $400,000 to Planned Parenthood, almost half of the annual donation from Susan G. Komen. Obviously, Komen provided an annual donation, and this is a one-time outpouring in reaction. So it will hurt Planned Parenthood. But they also gained a lot of allies and awareness from this exchange.
Moreover, Susan G. Komen is hearing frustration from their own board members:
Ann Hogan is the board president for Susan G. Komen for the Cure Connecticut. When I gave her a call this afternoon, to discuss the new policy that will bar her group from contracting with Planned Parenthood, she had one word for her reaction: Frustrated.
“We are funding [Planned Parenthood] and we are absolutely frustrated by this,” she says. And when I ask her to explain her frustration, she says it mostly has to do with people like me.
“The frustration is the time we’re spending right now on these types of calls,” she says. “I would love for you to call me in June. I would love for you to say Connecticut is doing an amazing job with Race for the Cure, and how can we get the work out. I’m a volunteer. This isn’t my job, this is my passion…so it’s frustrating we’re spending our time like this.”
Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) pulled her support of Susan G. Komen over this episode. And I’m sure that’s just the beginning. Wait until the corporate sponsors that partner with Susan G. Komen hear from thousands of angry customers.
Oh, and that residual benefit that Susan G. Komen would get from the anti-choice community? Yeah, that hasn’t materialized:
Lou Engle’s Bound4Life, which pushed LifeWay bookstores to stop selling Komen’s “Pink Bible,” commended Komen but like [Family Research Council president Tony] Perkins, asked the group to go even farther to please the far-right by abandoning their support of stem cell research.
You give the theocratic right an inch and they want to take a mile. It happens every time.

March 24, 2012, Komen’s Annual Race for the Cure starting at Dodger Stadium. http://www.komenlacounty.org/komen-race-for-the-cure/
Note the “Annual”. From now on, let that Race remind you, as it will me, that it’s time to send Planned Parenthood a donation.
In fact, remember, when you see a Komen-pink ribbon, cross the organization that displays it off of your donation list, and send that donation to Planned Parenthood instead.
That should keep PP in funds.
PS: I’m leaving this response under an ad for “Liberty University Online. Training Champions For Christ.”
I think I’ll double that donation to Planned Parenthood.
So hey, Komen Foundation? How’s all that brand damage working out for ya?
NPR even covered the story tonight, and they’re about as plain vanilla as it is possible to get.
Cancervative Republicans are out to destroy America, and cancervative Republicans like Mitt Romney, and those running Komen, really just don’t give a damn about the poor, since the poor, like those who go to Planned Parenthood for their health needs, aren’t big donors to the cancervative Republican Party.
Or should that be Republicancervative, one word?
Hmm, I think I’ll tweet this from now on in describing Republican Cancervatives. For some reason, Republican and Cancer go together, just like cancer and conservative fit together, destroying, mestacizing, killing, and apparently no amount of democratic chemotherapy will ever rid our society of Cancervative Republicans.
Yo D-Day:
If you haven’t already covered this, I wouldn’t mind seeing something on it in the next day or two.
A reporter trying to film a subcommittee hearing getting hooked and booked? That’s seriously jacked up…
I hope this shit not only destroys Komen but ignites a long-overdue resurgence of mass female resistance to the theofascist industrial complex.
So as of 2009, the Susan G. Koman Foundation had given $7.5 million to Penn State:
http://live.psu.edu/story/40504
Isn’t Penn State “under investigation”? Something about members of their athletic department raping young boys in the showers? Is the Susan G. Koman foundation going to “suspend” grants to Penn State until they’re “cleared”?
Some journalist type should really start looking through Komen’s tax filings for the past couple of years and see who else is “under investigation”.
Copy that.
Down with corporate white male aggression in America!!!!!!!
I agree with you!
The question Progressives must ask, is how long do we tolerate these MORONS?
What sane nation on planet earth would consider FOX a news organization?
the 1% has developed an army of MORONS!!!
the left needs to force Corporate America to make some choices
The USA is clearly a divided nation!!!
the left needs to develop plans to disconnect from the right
for example
maybe progressives on shop at Target and we let the MORON shop at Wal-Mart
maybe progressives only drink Pepsi, and we let the MORONS drink COKE
I suggest we give the MORONIC right entire states, they can run and control, the left does not need South Carolina, Mississippi, ALABAMA, let the MORONS have these states
the USA as a nation can not continue on the current course, progressives can not saved the MORONs the 1% have created!
Between CA Senator Boxer (D) and CA House Rep Jackie Speir (D) there are some who have both come out loud and hard pro PP and anti Komen on this.
Good times!
I hope the new movie TBogg profiled, Pink Ribbons, Inc. goes viral upon its release 2/3/12.
I also hope this is yet another nail chiseled into the corpse of the GOP/Dims and political process that abuses us all.
The politicos are failing at every step, in or out of office (Handel was a governor before fucking up and exposing Komen’s scams for all to see).
Good times!
Let them all fail, and rot in the public’s eye . . . almost as good as dunking and stocks in the public square!!
i need an attribution for this quote:
“… Moreover, Susan G. Komen is hearing frustration from their own board members:
Ann Hogan is the board president for Susan G. Komen for the Cure Connecticut. When I gave her a call this afternoon, to discuss the new policy that will bar her group from contracting with Planned Parenthood, she had one word for her reaction: Frustrated…”
who is the “i” who gave the board member a call.
totally unrelated to the above is this:
the board nember did not appear at all concerned with the actions of the organization’s executive director vis-a-vis planned parenthood,
only with the fact that answering calls and questions were keeping her from the org’s work.
sounds to me like the board was consulted and in agreement with their exec’s move against planned parenthood.
so who has promised kommen lots of money to do what they did?
the susan kommen ____, whores for big
money??
But she was just trying to reach out to Republicans.
It’s the usual DLC, Obama approved plan. Do something totally right wing and politically useless, alienate 400,000 liberal votes, and get no conservative votes in return. Then wonder why everyone thinks you’re a pathetic sellout.
I have a friend of mine that worked at Planned Parenthood in my hometown of Peoria, IL, where I still live. She knew Susan Komen (who is buried here) and her family (who were Jewish)and she supported Planned Parenthood when she was alive.
Now that she’s gone, the theofascists who run the Foundation named after her have no regard for her legacy except to selfishly use it as a weapon to punish their perceived “enemies” ala Nixon and promote their political agenda.
It appears now that the “charitable” nature of this organization has ceased to be and they are just another willing tool of extremists bent on forcing their corrupt and hypocritical theology on all of us. They should have their 501c3 designation revoked if they are going to be a political advocacy organization.

You know what to do.
Uhhhhh, yep; sounds about right.
It’s hard to look at the political landscape without thinking, “What’s the point……”
Bank of America is “under investigation” and Komen is still partnering with them. Why?

Meet the woman who got Komen to defund Planned Parenthood
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/post/meet-the-woman-who-got-komen-to-defund-planned-parenthood/2012/02/02/gIQA5DcVkQ_blog.html
And don’t forget that only 20% of Komen goes to research while the CEO gets a $500K salary.
I believe it’s also Obama who is working hard to deny important screening tests to people on Medicare. “Needless’ testing is one of the things he is determined to cut , and one of those ‘needless’ tests is breast cancer screening, along with prostate cancer screening and other important test seniors and the poor can’t afford on their own. All so he can cut more billions from Medicare and Medicaid in an effort to show he’s as vicious and uncaring as Republicans. So go ahead with your fantasy that it’s all the republicans’ fault, re-elect Obama and watch him go to town cutting vital medical services to the elderly and poor. It’s a cornerstone of Obamacare to do this. “Needless” testing and treatment decided by government bureaucrats instead of you and your doctor. Next it will be everyone.
Komen sure rode the tiger…
