Following up on this item, it’s worth noting that, while an aggressive counter-terrorism policy may be publicly popular, there are indications that it’s completely unnecessary. Kevin Drum has this chart showing that indictments for homegrown support for terrorist attacks have declined significantly. In addition, violent attacks carried out by Muslim-Americans in 2011 were almost non-existent. Drum quotes a recent report: “Of the 20 Muslim-Americans accused of violent terrorist plots in 2011 only one, Yonathan Melaku, was charged with carrying out an attack, firing shots at military buildings in northern Virginia. Nobody was injured.” The report shows that, “in the ten years since 9/11, Muslim American terrorist plots have killed 33 people in the U.S. but there have been more than 150,000 murders.”
What’s more, a Defense Department official acknowledged that the US over-estimated the threat from Al Qaeda over the past several years:
Michael A. Sheehan, the assistant secretary of defense for special operations and low intensity conflict, told an audience Tuesday, “Quite frankly, we, the American people, were asleep at the switch, the U.S. government, prior to 9/11. So an organization that wasn’t that good looked really great on 9/11.”
Sheehan, speaking at a Special Operations, Low Intensity Conflict Planning conference, questioned Al Qaeda’s capabilities:
Everyone looked to the skies every day after 9/11 and said, ‘When is the next attack?’ And it didn’t come, partly because al-Qaida wasn’t that capable. They didn’t have other units here in the U.S. … Really, they didn’t have the capability to conduct a second attack.
We completely overdid the response to 9/11. That was always going to happen at first – 9/11 was a catalyzing event, and the response would of course be vast. But at this point, it’s just total overkill. Terrorism is a law enforcement issue and will be in the same manner that it has been for decades. But it is not a world-historical issue that threatens the safety and sanctity of every American. In relative terms, freeway driving carries more peril.
Of course, the transition of the United States to a national security and surveillance state has other side effects. Most of the Patriot Act provisions allegedly directed toward fighting terrorism have been used in drug busts. We have seen over the past several years counter-terrorism resources used to monitor non-violent protesters, animal rights activists, even peace advocates. And the drone industry is one of the fastest-growing in America. So the bipartisan consensus that has formed around these overblown terrorist and security issues serves many purposes.

“So the bipartisan consensus that has formed around these overblown terrorist and security issues serves many purposes.”; again, you excellently sum up a subject.
Fascist need a reason to maintain the security state.
It’s a wholly manufactured growth industry brought to us by Joe “Israel” Lieberman, W, Cheney and Rumsfeld with the DHS as administrator for transferring taxpayer dollars to private contractors, their friends and associates.
The they’re not gonna like these “sutistics“.
This might be an appropriate place to retype that there are more Americans killed by dog bites than by terriss. So time to replace dogs with terriss as man’s best friend.

Hoover would be SOOOO proud.
Yes, but here’s another way to look at it (or a slightly different but related “take”). There are probably still some for-real security issues not being addressed post-9/11. For ex, Chertoff & other 1%ers are getting mega-rich off of stupid pet tricks done by the TSA (no offense to the workers) that purports to make us “safer” when flying in airplanes.
IMO, it’s just bunk. Why? Firstly because I think the magnatometers & pornorapescan machines don’t do as much as touted. As well, to date, almost nothing’s been done about baggage handling, other than Xraying & random snooping in luggage. Are there security screenings for baggage handlers? I don’t think so, but I could be wrong.
What about our ports, for example? How much security is there? Not much.
Our rapidly decaying infrastructure, imo, is a huge security threat that could definitely have a negative impact on us all, but does anyone talk about that? Much less do anything about it?
So, yeah, the overblown response to 9/11 was to use it as an excuse to set up a fascist security system to spy on on US citizens, but almost none of it really does bupkiss to keep us “safe” from terrorists, such as they are.
Good post, however.
I heard that a 40- year single old woman is more likely to get killed by a terrorist than find a husband.
..
..
Oh, I heard that 30 years ago. ‘spose it’s still true.
Who exactly gets paid to keep track of that stuff? My wife is looking for a job.
Baggage & ports not much of a problem from what I’ve read. After all, if you had nefarious objectives, would you rely on a shipper or baggage handler to get your stuff where you need it?
Lucky 40-year old woman. Made the same mistake twice. Been much happier since I figured it out & didn’t make it a third time.
Ahhh, the elusive “silver lining.”
Shame though, according to these numbers, finding a terrorist is getting harded and harder.
You might want to use those alternatives. If, indeed, somehow TSA is making a difference, then there may other ways to, uh, “skin the cat.”
I don’t particularly feel either baggage handlers or the ports are that big of a terrorist threat either, but focusing almost exclusively on passengers flying on airplanes seems a bit futile to me.
Of course, other than making money, a lot of that was done to gin up fear in US citizens, most of whom buy into it and then are happy to go along with the security state, yadda yadda yadda… hence: mission accomplished! (at last, sort of).
The whole thing is a justification for keeping us “tidy.” Can’t have people doing freedom-type things in a democracy. Gets so messy.
I was gonna say that. Who can forget Lieberman’s constant grandstanding on terra and DHS Security-State Juggernautical Boondoggles? Both Lieberman’s – the one in Israel and the American Senator with Dual Citizenship – Big On terra. One wonders why. /S
The way high-profile Democrats like Hillary and Barack fell all over themselves favoring and defending the “Connecticut For Lieberman” Party over their own Party and its Primary Winner Ned Lamont.
That was another Great Tell in the Farce that is Obama and the Democratic Party.
Other early “tells” were the FISA Flip with Retroactive Telco Immunity and the TARP.
“You might want to use those alternatives. If, indeed, somehow TSA is making a difference, then there may other ways to, uh, “skin the cat.”
———-
Personally, I would NOT have thought that making everybody take of their shoes before boarding a plane, and patting down 4 year olds and nuns would have been so productive. But the numbers certainly prove that out. /s
So let’s see…
We take 1/2 of the federal domestic law enforcement and put it on domestic terrorist threats. Then we take between 40 and 60 percent of what remains and put it on child pornography.
Then we find out (two years ago) that the rate of child sex offenders was one tenth what was estimated by Congress. And now we find out that the rate of domestic terrorist threat from homegrown “jihadis” is a tiny fraction of what the government thought it was, if it exists at all.
So with 3/4 or more of federal law enforcement neutered by all of this, does anyone wonder that the group called “white collar criminals” never got prosecuted?
Can we get a show of hands on how many think that was a coincidence?
I think you’re giving the federal government way too much credit. I don’t see that so much as strategic as just sheer ineptitude.
I did a reasonably extensive scan thru potential exposure to terriss threat after 9/11. Nothing in depth, but just raised a lot of Qs and kept alert for places to get them answered. The explanation I gave you on shippers & baggage handlers is the one that made most sense to me. After all, such threats require careful planning and execution, and no self-respecting terriss would want to leave something as important as materiel in someone else’s hands.
If you wanted to take chances, or skin the cat in other ways in your vocabulary, there are lots of possibilities. I observe as a matter of evidence that none of them occur.
Airport security is a CYA and graft operation, nothing more. The only thing you can get fired for is letting something happen the same way it happened before. So while terriss have moved on, the bureaucracy hasn’t and can’t.
Best cartoon on gay marriage I have seen. Middle aged hetero couple, man looks up from the newspaper. Caption: Gay marriage? Haven’t those poor people suffered enough already?
You forgot the drug warz. I think adding up the number that would account for more than 100% of all the ‘law’ enforcement, but I note that there’s still a cop or two left who can shoot a child to death in his own bathroom. Or shoot a fumbling-for-wallet black guy 41 times.
The events of September 11, 2001 seem to this day to be a license for otherwise rational people to behave stupidly. Obviously it was a very traumatic event but to then exploit it as it has been, to manipulate peoples’ fears….that was evil. But it’s also undeniably true that if people hadn’t been a bunch of vapid jellyfish who really want to live and are more than happy to hand over our liberty in order to feel safer, that incredibly, ridiculously transparent exploitation that was employed would have failed miserably. I wonder why that doesn’t work for lightning? Somebody could make a fortune selling personal lightning rods and you stand a far greater chance of being struck by lightning than being struck by, (especially Islamic), terrorism.
Shark attack! Be afraid, be very afraid.
I’m sure a 40 year woman is much more likely to get killed by her husband than a terrorist.. oh wait…
Well, she’d be 70 now. Got her number?
Ha! I remember the incredibly stupid “Jaws” fiasco! I had the beach virtually to myself for a couple of months!
P.S. Come to think of it, I’ll bet it was waaaaay worse in New York.
Now that’s a silver lining. Jaws was one of the pop culture events I thought I had to suffer thru as a Merkun. I LOLed in the movie theater, it was so hokey. Good thing it was dark so I couldn’t see the scowls directed at me.
Even before the flips on FISA and TARP, Obama’s biggest tell was to request Lieberman as his mentor upon entering the Senate. His appointment of Emanuel as Chief of Staff cemented his allegiance to Israel, the Banksters, and perpetual war.
Lotsa similar tells, just very few poker players among the electorate.
Hmmm. I never understood poker until just now.
I read it and therefore skipped the movie though I was a fan of both Roy Scheider and Richard Dreyfuss. Benchley’s book was too stupid for me to sit through it in movie form, thanks.
It was deliberate. Watch the video here. More here
Don’t forget Cass Sunstein, holeybuybull, “We will not criminalize policy differences …” and “looking forward”. Guess what Ole Cass does now?
DW
What is Cass Sunstein doing now. I could goggle him but figured your rendition would be more amusing.
It would be worthwhile for Congress or someone to look into the single greatest state sponsor of terrorism, tally up the death and mayhem they produce globally, and make a plan to put a stop to it. Of course I’m referring to the US government and its agencies and
mercenariescontractors (including Israel). Drone attacks, murder of foreign scientists, murder of American citizens, political dirty tricks on a global basis, etc., are blatant acts of terror which do nothing to improve or maintain US national security, but goes a long way toward threatening everyone else’s.But but but it’s American exceptionalism. We’re allowed (as is Israel) bc we’re god’s chosen people.
@holybuybull:
@hackworth:
This is not an anomaly within the Dem Party. This is what they are now.
I’ve quoted this before, but its good. Matt Taibbi from 2005- he could see what they were preparing for 2008.
Any wonder that one of Obama’s hero’s is Reagan?
You’re lucky you didn’t see it in Brooklyn. Somebody mighta crept up behind you and bit you in the ass, just to teach you a lesson lol. (It might even have been me.)
That’s one way of losing weight.
There you go again, always the optimist lol.
Ruthless tonight and in the past couple of weeks.
Cleaning out old items in pantry.
Getting rid of clutter that I am no longer emotionally attached to.
Got rid of TV and cable connection to TV today, though maintained cable internet connection. (Wouldn’t if there were a cheaper alternative.)
Deleting myself from email lists. Just dissed Sierra Club.
Not an optimist. Au contraire. Just trying to look at every sitiation from the most perverted POV.
Arthur Silber on that subject
http://powerofnarrative.blogspot.com/2010/07/we-are-not-special-and-there-is-no.html
Did you ever find out how much of the stimulus money was spent on TSA Rape scanners?
Silber is a national treasure.
But on most subjects, there is little new left to type.
In that case, you’re right, you’re not an optimist. Just a high achiever. ;-)
Did we ever find out how much of the $20 billion ever made it to NYC for 9/11.
Or W’s $15 billion in 5 years for AIDS prevention in Africa.
The list could go on.
My fave is $9 billion O gave to Excelon, one of his top 10 donors. Their contribution to him in the magnitude of hundreds of thousands or perhaps low millions, for which they get $9 billion taxpayer money in return, for nuke power plant they will never build, or more accurately, as one commenter put it, for a nuke power plant they will half build.
I’ll take that as a compliment.
9/11 was a false flag attack. There never was a substantial terrorist threat. Both the war on terror and the war on drugs are COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY AND ALWAYS HAVE BEEN. Except that they were necessary for the Oligarchy to turn a Democratic Republic into a Fascist Police State.
THAT’S a bookmark!
Not that we all don’t know or feel this, it’s great to have this level and volume of detail in one read to refer to easily . . .
Thanks so much Mr. Dayen.
Nah, it’s all to make profits from war mongering AND to suppress the masses from revolting.
Ok, we quibble over little . . . lol
Who makes the machinery and employs the people, to do all this.
N then, who did they buy off to enact legislation and enforce it all.
End of story.
Profits and suppression, rolled into one, at the bidding and delight of the corporate fascist system that owns us all.
None of that’s new news, but as I said, great read to have all this terrorist faux meme in one read . . .
Dang yer hide, short and concise, once again.
Simple end of story (others would of course, rail to gods and goddesses for details).
*G*
“Cannnndy Gram . . “
Yeah, I’ll go with his cabinet appointments as my first dire warning I had cast a vote for all the wrong reasons . . . sigh.
Still got my vote, seem to have lost my voter reg for DIMS (since ’71).
;-)
I, and many, would argue that 911 was deliberative in one way or another, too.
Good to see yer fonts hoss, hope all is well with you.
Heh, if there WAS a god, she’d have him making license plates or in total isolation in Pelican Bay . . . hanging’s too GOOD for those of his ilk.
;-)
I cast my vote for all the right reasons, LOL.
McCain is senile.
O was lesser evil.
O was possible game changer bc of race in U.S. POTUS history.
How could you be on record NOT voting for him.
Even though I knew for sure it was wrong.
Profit and control, profit and control.
It is what it is.
A timeless effort bearing WAY too much fruit for this planet and its masses to survive at this time of its execution.
We’re outgunned, Josey . . . not much solace but sadly, it cannot endure as it’s unsustainable.
Never mind we all go down as it collapses, but yeh, the fuckers will go down too . . .
Hillary would rip her newly long and very unattractive hair out if anyone were to point out U.S. hypocrisy.
Bingo.
Yep.
End of story.
Nothing left new to type, as eCahn so well points out above.
Sunstein is the Administrator of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, eCAHN.
DW
It is verboten to put that much truth into one paragraph, workingclass.
DW
!
Regulatory Affairs. The imagination runs wild. Blow jobs with supervision? Exactly what’s “sex” and what’s not “sex”. Woulda little nudga do ya? How greasy would that have been. Enough for, well, ya know, what…
I could go on but even I’m bored with the hypocrisy.
Superb!!!
;~DW
Oh, and need I cite headline about terrissm being ‘overblown.’ I’ sure that pun was entirely unintended.
That report will have no effect. As long as politically connected miscreants can profit from hyping the terrorism threat, then it will be hyped.
Your ‘doctor’ has higher chance of killing you than a t error ist.
http://chriskresser.com/medical-care-is-the-3rd-leading-cause-of-death-in-the-us
I note, for the record, that you identified a number of such apparently unintended puns, today, eCAHN.
It is a talent, too little appreciated in the OVERLQQK …
DW
You just explained why the MIC is stirring-up trouble in the Middle East. The MIC will get their new terrorist attack against the USA come HELL or high water. They are counting on it for their survival.
