So let me get this straight. During the non-event known as Climategate, hackers stole confidential emails from scientists at the University of East Anglia, and in many cases misinterpreted them, and the climate scientists received almost all of the criticism. Now, climate researcher Peter Gleick admits to obtaining documents from the Heartland Institute, the contents of which show a verified multi-million dollar campaign against climate science and effort to take the ideological battle into public schools (the only “fake” document in the bunch was the one that Gleick first received anonymously), and…. this climate scientist is receiving the lion’s share of the criticism, at least today, for his illicit acquisition of the documents. Here’s what Gleick had to say:
At the beginning of 2012, I received an anonymous document in the mail describing what appeared to be details of the Heartland Institute’s climate program strategy. It contained information about their funders and the Institute’s apparent efforts to muddy public understanding about climate science and policy. I do not know the source of that original document but assumed it was sent to me because of my past exchanges with Heartland and because I was named in it.
Given the potential impact however, I attempted to confirm the accuracy of the information in this document. In an effort to do so, and in a serious lapse of my own and professional judgment and ethics, I solicited and received additional materials directly from the Heartland Institute under someone else’s name. The materials the Heartland Institute sent to me confirmed many of the facts in the original document, including especially their 2012 fundraising strategy and budget. I forwarded, anonymously, the documents I had received to a set of journalists and experts working on climate issues. I can explicitly confirm, as can the Heartland Institute, that the documents they emailed to me are identical to the documents that have been made public. I made no changes or alterations of any kind to any of the Heartland Institute documents or to the original anonymous communication.
Gleick apologized for the lapse in judgment, and of course the Heartland Institute and its allies in combat want more than a pound of flesh. But the major difference between this situation and Climategate, as far as I can see it, is that Gleick admitted to the conduct, while the hackers who stole the Climategate emails haven’t. So the focus was kept on the emails in Climategate [or their mischaracterization by climate change deniers], but the focus is only on the acquisition of the emails in the Heartland Institute affair.
This is the kind of asymmetrical warfare we see constantly in the climate change battle. It’s actually explicitly covered in the Heartland strategy documents. The right attacks and attacks and attacks and has no interest in getting tripped up by ethics or hypocrisy. The scientific community bends and begs and self-criticizes. And we see the results; climate denial is a fast-growing industry in America, and the public doubts the facts behind climate change now more than ever.
You don’t have to agree with Gleick’s conduct to see the pattern here. And I’ll outsource the rest to Mr. Bogg.

Crossing the Line as Civilization Implodes: Heartland Institute, Peter Gleick and Andrew Revkin

Elizabeth Kolbert: It may seem impossible to imagine that a technologically advanced society could choose, in essence, to destroy itself, but that is what we are now in the process of doing.
http://thinkprogress.org/romm/issue/
These people that are working this , are evil;
They should be shut down, They should be locked up, they should be subjected to scorn and ridicule, they should be outcasts.
They are destroying this planet.
Well said. These nut jobs see it as a war, and as such lying, and I suppose other things thoughtful humans find horrifying, are not only allowed but actively planned out and pursued. These people are disgusting.
What an unmitigated load of crap.
The world is not dying and the kind of BS you clipped is giving children nightmares. Stop it.
That said, the most controversial document is claimed to be fake. Considering the number of times climate people have lied, fabricated, and backtracked on claims, I have no problem believing even more deception is involved than was already confessed.
Shooter, you live up to your namesake’s disgusting lies. The only deception in the climate debate is from Heartland and their ilk. Go away.
Mr. Gleick,
I have read many stories about this incident and read you are very remorseful about your actions. Don’t be. I know you feel scummy having to go down to their level, but it was necessary and not unethical at all. Do you think any of these Deniers would not jump at the opportunity to convince an unsuspecting underling to disclose confidential information? Think James O’Keefe and ACORN. In your world, it was unethical; in theirs, it’s standard operating procedure.
I volunteer shooter242 to be the first on Venus, to experience first hand the result of his “head in the sand” approach to climate change.
let’s see, who should I listen to?
we have the “‘shooters” of this world, with no facts, no research, and bad science, who anonymously posts short rants that provide no information, just insults;
or
almost 100 percent of the world’s scientists, qualified in this field, who have been researching this question for many years.
tough one isn’t it?
All the science and the projections tell us that if we completely eliminate all so-called greenhouse gas emissions today, the climate has been ruined as far as life as we know it, and nothing can recover it. The effects will be catastrophic for humans.
I’m one of the group who agree that we have created the problems and the nearing disasters from them.
Elizabeth Kolbert has written elsewhere that we are already experiencing the sixth extinction of life forms on the planet that have occurred over the last several hundred millions of years.
The only thing we don’t know is if we are the first (and last?) to be aware of the extinctions.
Kolbert isn’t hopeful. She realizes that humans have been destructive of everything they’ve encountered ever since they became human.
This is certainly the case, the sixth great has extinction is happening.
In terms of climate change, while it may be very difficult to conceptualize any success given the way that feedback loops will play out over the next eon or so, it is important to realize that people like Gleick are fighting the difficult battles. He will probably be labeled and have his funding needs challenged by the flat earth society (Heartland/ALEC/AEI whatever) for the the rest of his career.
Is there any hope? The flat-earthers have lots of money, legions of dupes, and even mercenaries who hate most of America and are violent. But if we can shut down coal exports we might be able to alleviate some of the damage. Obama has been a real let down on this, but hundred of millions around the world (and all the critters not going extinct this time) want and need relief from the ravages of corporate capitalism, and for people like Gleick, who are willing to sacrifice their career to take on the nut jobs we must continue to press for a halt to coal exports. On Feb 23rd Europe may bar Tar sands imports and hopefully Obama will grow a spine.
Will it be enough. No, probably not, but by giving in to corporate scum who want to maximize profit while killing the planets biosphere andy sentencing huge swaths of the human and non-human population to starvation and death we really do give up and surrender all that this nation was once the promise of.
The NY Times was censoring the comments to Andrew Rivkins opinion piece on this this morning. They would not allow any comment that mentioned Rivkin being exposed by these documents as a friendly Heartland conduit. My comment that just mentioned the Climategate issue were posted, but not the others.
Now all the comments have been deleted and commenting is closed.
There is no real evidence that CO2 emissions from human activity are causing global warming of significance. The hypothesized multiplier effect has not been demonstrated. In contrast there is overwhelming evidence that solar activity drives climate. Look at the correlation over long term between cosmic ray intensity, which is modulated by solar activity, and earth’s temperature — the relationship is quite clear. The sun is becoming less active than it has been for centuries. We are on a trajectory for a repeat of the Dalton minimum or the Maunder minimum which were associated with global cooling and massive crop failures. Please read the evidence.
That is pure crap. . . . the idea that cosmic ray activity is driving Earth’s temperature has been totally debunked.
In fact it is Denier Myth #11 — you can read about the myth, and its debunking here:

the article you cite is from 2007. CERN’s recent results prove the 2007 study was incorrect. We are fortunate that the majority of the American people have educated themselves sufficiently that they no longer accept the human-caused global warming theory. There will be no national carbon tax in the US. The global warming zealots have lost the battle for the hearts and minds of the American people. Nuclear power, coal and natural gas are the future.
