You may remember Waukesha County (Wisconsin) Clerk Kathy Nickolaus. Last year, she miraculously found thousands of votes in a state Supreme Court election two days after the balloting, which threw the race to incumbent David Prosser over JoAnn Kloppenburg. A subsequent investigation showed that Nickolaus violated state law on her reporting of election results. Also, reports detailed her ties to top Republican operatives in the state (Prosser was a former Republican elected official).
Wisconsin held its Presidential primary last week and Nickolaus had more troubles. She was under order from the Government Accountability Board to deliver paper voting machine results so that the two-day omission never happened again. This became a disaster, as the electronic upload from the ballot machines to final databases didn’t work, and staff had to manually type all the data in by hand, with reporters physically checking the paper machine tapes to get a running count.
It was another embarrassment for Nickolaus. And now, she’s been demoted.
Waukesha County Executive Dan Vrakas said he would publicly call for County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus’ resignation unless she handed off her election duties in the upcoming recalls to her deputy clerk.
Nickolaus chose the latter. She agreed to allow outside consultants and county staff to work with her deputy, Kelly Yaeger, to handle the election, Vrakas said.
“The county will move swiftly to examine the election night procedures in the county clerk’s office and make changes as necessary to restore the public’s confidence in our elections,” Vrakas said in a statement late this afternoon.
Thousands of counties across the country have mastered the art of reporting voting totals on election night. Waukesha County just can’t seem to do it. Vrakas could only ask that Nickolaus step aside or resign, as she is an independent elected officer. But this demotion is essentially an acknowledgment that she doesn’t know how to do her job. She’s still allowed to give out the marriage licenses.
Brad Friedman, who I believe reported this first, adds that Nickolaus is up for re-election this year. That’s going to be one tough campaign. “Vote for Me: I’ve Recused Myself From Counting Votes, So Everything’s Fine Now!”

Not good enough. She should be in prison.
She knowingly and intentionally rigged voting outcomes to favor Republican candidates. In multiple cases. She did know how to do her job, and also figured out how to do it in a way that made the outcome favorable to her friends.
Again; I say prison.
I’ll have what you’re having.
The fact that this creature was elected to begin with shows that the general populace in Wisconsin was just not paying attention. Hopefully that has changed now.
Or maybe they are *paying attention,* and they like what they see? At least those who see “their way” being “voted” in…
Frankly, imo, it’s not just “officials” or “politicians” who are corrupt anymore. The corruption is at all levels, including John & Jane Q Citizens who either collude with this bullshit and/or are too lazy to pay attention. JHMO, of course.
Are we sure that her election was clean the first time around or was there some hanky-panky in that election? We have some WI people on this site that should be able to tell us.
Thanks for this unsurprising post.
Kathleen HarrisKathy Nickolaus is corrput. Whoddaguessed???Does she get to wear a dunce cap and stand in a corner, too?
What a farce laws have become when nobody is truly held accountable for actual crimes, and they all seem to be taking their cues from the top. I always thought the chief law enforcement officer of the land is the President, since he is the one charged with appointing an Attorney General. But it sure seemed to me that the President made the decision to look forward, not backward, and that meant no investigation in wrongdoing for crashing the economy. After that, why sweat the small stuff.
Yep. She was using her own personal computer for the official government business of tracking votes, IIRC. Of course she was cheating. Jail for her.
Yes, but who counted the votes in her first election? A little log rolling in Waukesha, mebbe?
What’er you drinking today, BC?
Republicans like to holler about “voter fraud” when it is obvious they have perfected the art of “voting official fraud”
Yep, not incompetent–corrupt.
Elections are a pain in the ass all over.

How about some clean water unpolluted by toluene or any other carcinogenic chemicals resulting from fracking, thank you. We should be able to happily share such, don’t you think? Especially with two brilliant minds operating.
Ah, but she already has the Koch money in her pocket. Isn’t this the area Paul Ryan is from? The repubs are trying to clean up their act by passing voter ID laws. If no one but repubs can vote then they won’t need to cheat to win elections.
Sooner or later the electronic masturbation booths AKA “voting machines” will be outlawed and the GOP is already working on the next scam Project, the Voter ID poll tax.
The media loves to paint these things as left vs. right and they all do it. But why is it whenever these things come to light, it’s 99% of the time the right who does these illegal things. Why is it the right are the ones pushing these draconian bills to take away voting rights, equal pay rights, and women’s rights. But you know when the mainstream media discusses this and similar stories, they’ll be quick to point both the right and left pull these type shenanigans, never having to provide any proof of the left actually doing these things!
First, Ryan is not from Waukesha County. Secondly, he only represents a small amount of Waukesha County. Third, can’t imagine the Koch brothers bothering with her, though odder things have happened.
I thought she stole the Supreme Court elections. Smarter people than me, including the candidate, agreed with the non-partisan conclusion that she, in fact, had lost 2000 votes.
The woman is an idiot. Saying she is corrupt is giving her too much credit. It is a typical Wisconsin good government move to tell her to resign or relinquish her vote counting duties. I’m amazed that hyper-partisanship has not affected the Republican County Executive.
As we know, incompetent and stupid people get elected. She is one of them and I don’t think she will ever hold office again.
Now we can win in Waukesha! She was stuffung the ballot boxes………
No, she’s corrupt. Whether she cheated with consistent effectiveness or not is a different story.
I’m afraid that in current Fitzwalkerstan terms, she’s not even the worst elected official in Wisconsin. Wildly incompetent, obnoxious, and self-serving. But I’m afraid far from the worst. She at least shows up for work.
