New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is far more admired by national Republicans wanting a tough guy to yell at liberals than by his own constituents in his state. And a new report goes a long way to explaining why. Because Christie is the latest in a long line of conservative liars who will tailor their view of the facts to ideolgy. Christie cancelled a tunnel project across the Hudson River in 2010, a decision which made him very popular in conservative circles, because they are a sadistic sort that celebrates the stalling of progress and feasts on human misery. It turns out that he had to twist facts to justify this decision.
Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey exaggerated when he declared that unforeseen costs to the state were forcing him to cancel the new train tunnel planned to relieve congested routes across the Hudson River, according to a long-awaited report by independent Congressional investigators.
The report by the Government Accountability Office, to be released this week, found that while Mr. Christie said that state transportation officials had revised cost estimates for the tunnel to at least $11 billion and potentially more than $14 billion, the range of estimates had in fact remained unchanged in the two years before he announced in 2010 that he was shutting down the project. And state transportation officials, the report says, had said the cost would be no more than $10 billion.
Mr. Christie also misstated New Jersey’s share of the costs: he said the state would pay 70 percent of the project; the report found that New Jersey was paying 14.4 percent. And while the governor said that an agreement with the federal government would require the state to pay all cost overruns, the report found that there was no final agreement, and that the federal government had made several offers to share those costs.
I would say that pretending the costs to the state were five TIMES higher than reality constitutes more than a “misstatement.” It’s an outright lie. Christie didn’t want to pay for the tunnel project. He wanted to use the money for corporate tax breaks or whatever else. And he wanted to avoid an increase in the gas tax to pay for the project. So he just stretched the truth about it, maximizing the costs and de-emphasizing the benefits.
I enjoy how the governor’s spokesman added in a bunch of what he claims are related costs that would get the state’s share of funding to 65%, which is importantly not the 70% claimed at the time. So the share of funding is going down, and in 4 years, Christie’s campaign for President will show a bunch of facts and figures proving that New Jersey would have had to pick up 30% of the costs.
The impact on transportation, productivity and the economy in the Northeast Corridor cannot be overstated. Congestion will grow along that New Jersey/New York City commute in the coming years, they will ripple out to other train lines across the Northeast, and it will have an undeniable economic impact. When a more enlightened governor tries to restart the project in a generation, the costs will be immeasurably higher.
Good for Frank Lautenberg for requesting this GAO study, which documents one man’s hubris and how it demonstrably hurt the country.

More Republican job creation.
What an important and relevant story. He’s the one they touted for a while for Pres….
looks like VP material to me.
O Dear…..I guess I won’t comment ;(
hmmm I wonder how this is going to play in NJ where the public is wondering
where are the JOBS Gov Christie? oh yeah, well I just didn’t want the Pres to look good.
Eh? That project woulda meant jobs and better transportation options for the proles.
Can’t have that! Misery loves company.
‘Sides the 1%ers all fly into Manhattan on their personal choppers, so they don’t need no stinkin’ tunnel.
why did we need another tunnel into Manhattan?
People making 250k a year in one of the highest cost of living areas in the country commute to work by helicopter?
have you ever tried to get to Manhattan from that part of NJ?
every day for seven years. Yourself?
Not every day, but quite often. Seems like a tunnel could help traffic flow.
I’ve got a virus with my PC, so I cannot get the link to several articles discussing this topic. But yes, there’s been an up-tick in helicopter commuting into Manhattan from places like Westchester, CT, Long Island & northern NJ. I’m not making it up. Those people clearly don’t care what happens for everyone else, as they’ve got their commute arranged.
And no, I’m not talking about people making $250k. Someone only making that much is NOT part of the 1%. Those income earners would be commuting along with the rest of the proles.
if true you must be a complete idiot not to know the traffic patterns getting into ny.
either your an idiot or like christi your a liar.
tell us which one.
no shit. I think I can guess which one… (or perhaps a combo).
Tunnel vs. pipeline.
Christie is just a big fat bully. One of these days he going to make one of his comments to the wrong person and he is going to get decked. That will shut him up. Since he took over, Jersey is falling apart. I think he may be the Vice-Presidential nominee. Romney will think he can delivery NJ. I don’t think he will be relected to Governor in a couple of years, so that would be his best shot to remain relevent.

It was a proposed train tunnel. Tell me about the “traffic patterns”. Must have been a different project than the one discussed above. I took the train for 7 years in and out of NYC ending last Summer. Rarely were there any issues and even fewer was it the result of congestion.
I think you have me wrong. I’m not here to discuss republican talking points. I happen to have a fair amount of experience making the commute this tunnel was expected to alleviate. The project would have simply been a waste of resources and money. Thats all.
Where did chris christy come from ? Try one of the republican stooges who george bush appointed after his firing of nine US Attorneys who didn’t toe the republican line.
Didn’t think I needed the snark tag…
Or me either…got it. Thanks.
One of the major issues of this post is that Christie lied about the costs & who would be responsible for what parts of the project.
I guess we can argue until the cows come home as to whether some of us, personally, think the project is worthwhile or not. And who knows? Perhaps it’s correct thinking that the project is a “waste.”
However, the main theme of the post is not that Christie provided good, factual info to the voters (aka, serfs) about whether the project wasn’t worthwhile or whatever. Rather Christie lied about costs and who would be charged for them.
That’s an issue for me. It’s not just Christie, but it’s more than annoying when politicians choose to lie, obfuscate and generally bullshit the public. Shameful.
The project would’ve provided jobs. Now these jobs are not available. I think that’s factual.
Hmmm…

If a Republican isn’t lying he or she isn’t breathing.
Lying sack of shit.
Sorry, I take that back…
HUGE lying sack of shit.
Fatass lied, what a shocker!
“Chris Christie Lied About Costs of Hudson River Tunnel Project He Cancelled”
Duh! He’s a Republican…
You’re not alone in that opinion. Soon after Christie cancelled the project, a blogger in North Jersey wrote an item by item analysis of the cancelled proposal and concluded based on personal experience and more knowledge of both sides of the river up there than I have–or ever want to have–that the project as proposed would be money spent to make commuting worse. I can’t support spending that much money badly and I think, I don’t know, the writer knew what he was talking about. But here’s the proof of the pudding as far as Chrisco’s concerned: so, Gov, modify the plans. Back to the drafting board and pull together a sound project. Chrisco just threw the project away, kept the monies already spent, and moved on, you’ll pardon the expression, to other spats. (He with his NJ state police praetorian guard at the ready to muscle dissenters out of the governor’s presence.)
