There has been a split between the public polling and the internal polling in the recall of Scott Walker. As you can naturally expect, internal polling on the Democratic side shows a closer race. And that continues today with a poll from Celinda Lake showing a dead heat between Walker and Milwaukee mayor Tom Barrett, which each candidate getting 49% of the vote. Barrett has the lead among independents, according to the poll, 49-44.
It should be pointed out that no poll, public or internal, has shown Barrett with a lead yet. Nevertheless, there are some factors that indicate a tightening of the race. First of all, the internal polls, like this one from Lake, are newer. They are picking up on a more advanced state of the race. And there’s reason to believe that Barrett would improve; he’s only gone on the air with any kind of advertising against Walker in the last two weeks.
Second, the Walker campaign or allied Republicans have not released any polling countering the internals from Democrats. If they had good numbers, you would think they would show them.
Third: this brutal negative attack ad the Walker campaign just put out against Barrett, which is simply not something a campaign confident in its abilities to run out the clock with a lead would do.
Fourth: The debate last Friday showed Barrett very much on the offensive, and Walker trying to play defense. There’s another debate scheduled for tomorrow, which could raise more attention to the race.
Fifth: Turnout is expected to be extremely high, between 60-65%. The rule of thumb is that high turnout favors Democrats, though both sides appear energized for this recall fight. At any rate, that turnout would skew higher than the 2010 election, where Walker beat Barrett.
Sixth: Walker continues to generate bad headlines from the John Doe investigation into corruption in his various public offices. Today, new campaign finance reports show that Walker delivered another $100,000 into his legal defense fund. That brings the total to $160,000 just over the past six weeks. Andy Kroll has more on that.
And finally, more money is coming in on the Democratic side. The Progressive Change Campaign Committee has filled in some of the gap on the ground with a $100,000 donation to facilitate grassroots get-out-the-vote campaigning. The Democratic Governor’s Association has delivered $3 million to date. There’s nothing approaching parity, but Democrats supporting Barrett have close to what they need to get their message out.
There’s a new poll expected today from Marquette Law School, and it will be key to seeing if the public polling is following the trend found by Dem-allied groups.
UPDATE: And that Marquette Law School pool did no favors to Barrett. It shows Walker up 52-45 among likely voters (50-44 overall), extending his lead and pushing past a 50% mark that had been a stubborn ceiling for him in most other polling. The signs of tightening could be a mirage. This is a poll that has Obama up 51-43 over Romney in the general election, so I doubt it’s a Republican-heavy sample.

Walker’s pitching this as Normal Red-Blooded ‘Merikin People Versus Dirty Hippie Union Slacker Commies. That’s why the hunting angle is so important: Walker and his appointees want to take away the right of most Wisconin hunters to hunt as their grandparents and great-grandparents did. That’s a big deal to many conservative rural folk, so much so that it’s hard to get them to believe that Walker would screw them that way. But you can tell it’s a potent attack by how Walker’s cronies have been trying to beat it back.
If the unions, who perpetually keep backing Obama, had even a little bit of sense and self respect, they would have made him go to Wisconsin and made him canvas against Walker. But, alas Trumpka and other union leaders are too busy pursuing photo-ops and other self-promotion measures.
Obama won’t step foot in Wisconsin until after the recall. If Barrett wins, Obama will show up in the state and attempt to take credit for his victory.
Mrs. Rennebohm is still waiting with Bucky for Barry to show up on the capital steps and show his support for the unions and people of Wisconsin.
Agreed. THis whole thing has been badly handled.
Agreed. I’m in an agreeable mood today. Obama doesn’t want to be blamed for a loss. And his reluctance to help “the people” may well result in one.
I don’t know what you base your ridiculous theory on. When has Obama stepped in after the fact to claim credit for something he had nothing to do with. Maybe you’re thinking of Mitt “Auto Recovery” Romney. Is that it? Turn Fox off every now and then.
Face the facts: Deep down in their souls, the Dems at the national level don’t want the recall to succeed. The last thing they want is for the public to get the idea that they can rise up and challenge elected officials, regardless of which branch of the UniParty they belong to.
David Koch to Scott Walker:
I’m NOT calling you this week, so DON’T take ANY calls from someone claiming to be me. Got that dipshit??
There are plenty of reasons to distrust the polling coming out of Marquette Law School.

Finally, from the Marquette poll website explaining the poll:
“That lead falls slightly short of statistical significance [my emphasis]. The poll was taken May 23-26, with most interviews completed before last Friday’s first gubernatorial debate, and has a margin of error of +/- 4.1 percentage points.”

I am not so sure that Obama could have done a thing for Barrett……in fact it could have hurt alot.
The only poll that’s going to matter in this or any other election is the poll that takes place involving voting booths in voting precincts and whatever completed absentee ballots have been sent in by registered voters.
Quite honestly, the people of Wisconsin have the power to make this change. If they don’t, shame on them.
As with any elected official, they only serve if we vote for them when given the chance. If we don’t vote for them, they’re outta there. It’s up to the people of Wisconsin to effect this change and no one else.
If Obama and Axelrod actually thought walker would be recalled, Obama would be going all over the state. But, they already are getting a bit of a loser’s stink on them, and don’t want to be associated with a Wis. loss.
So, under the bus you go.
The problem is Barrett. He screwed over workers in Milwaukee, just like a typical Democratic Party mayor. There was a more pro-worker candidate in the primary, but the Democratic Party establishment backed the more pro-corporate Barrett, of course, and he won.
So that begs the question: What’s the difference between Barrett and Walker? If most Wisconsin voters decide it’s “not much,” then Walker will keep his seat.
Chicago is 45 minutes from Milwaukee and an hour+ from Madison.
Shame on Obama if he can’t make it to Wisconsin before the recall and come Nov 6 he may wish he had.
The man is so averse to losing that he does not take up any challenges, and folds like a deck of cards in face of any opposition from the GOP. It is as if he is has no convictions other than to be risk averse.
I don’t think the O Admin really wants a big progressive win in Wisconsin. It would seriously undermine their control of the party. They like progressives to remain continually disheartened. Uncle Rom taught BO well in that regard. And, of course, they hedged their bets by ushering Barrett into the driver’s seat just so even a win would not really deliver a victory to the little guy and labor. In this light, the administration is working really hard in Wisconsin.
The local paper will read that Walker defeats Barrett again as the headline, but just like Dewey the opposite will be true.
Barrett by 1.2% easy!!!!!
