On this day in 1789 James Madison introduced twelve proposed amendments to the Constitution in the US House of Representatives. By 1791, ten of them had been ratified and became known as The Bill of Rights. Today . . .
Heads Up!
❖A federal judge in Manhattan has ruled that a lawsuit filed against the NYPD over arrests on the Brooklyn Bridge of some 700 Occupy Wall Street protestors can go forward.
❖Another federal judge has clarified her decision last month: “the White House cannot use the NDAA to indefinitely detain American citizens.”
❖NYPD’s stop-and-frisk tactic has generated so much interest that NYC representatives and US Congress members will meet with the US Department of Justice about them next week.
❖”Tienanmen veteran Shen Tong now lives in the United States and, more than two decades after the events in Beijing, he is demonstrating for a different cause: Occupy Wall Street.”
❖Former TSA Administrator Kip Hawley criticized TSA’s airport security approach today, saying “To be effective, airport security needs to embrace flexibility and risk management–principles that it is difficult for both the bureaucracy and the public to accept.” I’d accept that in a heart-beat, wouldn’t you?
❖”Nearly 900 homeless people are asking [the city of] Sacramento to reimburse them for tents and other items that police seized in raids.” In 2009 the county of Sacramento settled with the homeless for property seizures to the tune of $488,000 “and the development of elaborate policies for tagging and storing items seized during sweeps of illegal campsites.”
❖”C30, the sweeping Canadian warrantless Internet surveillance bill, is back . . ..” Under the rubric of “perimeter security”, the bill “would expand the warrantless surveillance to US authorities, who could also access Canadians’ private information.”
Working for a Living
❖”Colorado accidentally overpaid $128 million in unemployment benefits last year, and now the state is billing the jobless to get that money back . . ..” Other states have, too, to the tune of $5.1 billion, though it’s unclear whether they will follow Colorado and demand return of the overpayments.
❖”Teachers and staff at the Youth Connection Leadership Academy have filed an unfair labor complaint with the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board”, and have been joined by the Chicago Alliance of Charter Teachers and Staff, the American Federation of Teachers, and the AFL-CIO. Seems the Academy closed its doors the day after the teachers voted to unionize.
❖”New York City-based teachers of English as a second language at the Washington Post Co.’s . . educational subsidiary, Kaplan, Inc., voted [2-1] today for workplace representation by the Newspaper Guild of New York . . .. Some of the teachers were reportedly paid as low as the $7.25 federal minimum wage.
❖Palermo’s Pizza Workers in WI have called for a state-wide boycott against Palmero’s.
❖It’s being done anonymously, but a new website, “App Developers Union“, advertises itself as representing “third-party software developers that make applications for Apples App Store.”
❖Acting General Counsel of the US National Labor Relations Board has said that “employers cannot prohibit employees from discussing working conditions, including salary, with coworkers on social media” and found a few other provisions imposed by employers on use of social media by employees illegal.
Politics USA
❖Emails released by House Republicans show that a BigPharma lobbyist in June 2009 “e-mailed Nancy-Ann DeParle, the president’s top health care adviser” expressing concern about inclusion of imported medications in the health care bill. DeParle responded that she and others had decided to oppose importation “based on how constructive you guys have been . . ..” And, lo and behold, it became so.
❖Emails between MD Gov Martin O’Malley (Dem) and a general counsel of poultry giant Perdue Inc. reveal some interesting activities by O’Malley that benefited Perdue. Not only that, but apparently Perdue shifted its campaign contributions from the Republican Governor’s Association to the Democratic Governor’s Association, and so on.
❖Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-IL) and a group of Democrats in the House are proposing raising the minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.00/hour.
War on Women
❖Discrimination charges by almost 2000 women from 48 states were filed against Wal-Mart on Wednesday.
❖Once again, the International Violence Against Women Act has been introduced in the US House of Representatives. Rep Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), noting that Republicans opposed the Act in the past because it failed to prohibit abortions, said “This bill has nothing to do with abortion. Women’s rights are human rights.”
World Economics
❖Victims of Austerity: “Irish unemployment hits 14.8%”
Planet Earth News
❖Shades of King Canute! A NC Senate Committee “has approved a bill that restricts state agencies’ ability to take global warming into account when making sea-level rise projections.” At least King Canute commanded the sea to stop making waves in order to illustrate the folly of human arrogance.
❖Fracking in ND has resulted in toxic spills and waste dumping “with increasing regularity.” Over “1,000 accidental releases of oil, drilling wastewater or other fluids” were reported in 2011, though many others were not. Only 50 disciplinary actions have been issued by the state in three years and state officials “rely on companies to clean up spills voluntarily . . .”
❖The Environmental Protection Agency has been sued by seven conservation groups for its failure “to regulate the use of toxic lead bullets in hunting.” This follows a petition by 100 groups in March, which the EPA rejected in a nod to gun rights organizations.
❖”A parasitic mite has helped a virus wipe out billions of honeybees throughout the globe, say scientists”
❖India has established four more tiger sanctuaries, adding over 200 square miles to protected forest areas. They’ve also set up “tiger corridors” so tigers can move more safely from one forest to another.
❖NJ’s Department of Environmental Protection has been sued by the Resources Defense Council and Environment New Jersey because Republican Gov Chris Christie illegally withdrew from the regional cap-and-trade initiative.
Mixed Bag
❖In an anecdote related by Gary Sanger in his book about Obama’s secret wars, John Brennan’s colorful account of the Bin Laden raid stunned top brass in the Pentagon. So much so that then Secretary of Defense Gates told Tom Donilon of a “new strategic communications approach” he’d recommend. And what was that? Replied Gates: “Shut the fuck up!”
❖Graphic illustrating the contradiction between what makes us healthy and what we spend on being healthy.
Break Time
❖The moon wins; Large Hadron Collider dazed.
Have a great weekend!

In Memoriam: Israeli attack on USS Liberty
Some USS Liberty Pictures…
RE War on Women: Mob attacks women at Egypt anti-sex assault rally
Did I ever share with you Feinstein’s response to me when I pointed out the U.S.S. Liberty attack? Basically she punted to the DOD and didn’t want to hear anything else, including those names and contacts I referenced her to.
And yet Finklestein on DN thought there was hope because of young jewish liberals in this country. He’s more in tune with such an audience than I am but I still won’t believe it until I see it.
Shorter Schneiderman to Dday: Liar
loan, liar, pants on fire.Clearly, since David has become part of the story,
he needs to recuse himself from all future coverage of foreclosure fraud.
I just saw that too, ubetchaiam. It is an outrage! I must add my respect for those men who tried to guard the women and who will hopefully inspire many others.
Thanks so much for that reminder, CTuttle.
Oh, my my, allan!
*heh* Are you kidding…? ;-) Of course, Kwatra/Schneiderman were going to lie about the invite…! Now, Zack Carter did highlight some Barofsky’s more memorable quotes…
…”Our entire housing system is built on a foundation of fraud,”
…”Foreclosure relief and mortgage modification was what Congress demanded to bail out the banks,” Barofsky said. “That was part of the deal for TARP.”
…Barofsky dedicated much of his time on the panel to deriding the settlement with some of the biggest mortgage operators.
“You have a settlement that is supposed to change behavior … and how does it work? The taxpayer money flows from us toward them,” Barofsky said, referring to Wall Street banks that process mortgages and foreclosures. “They’re actually going to profit, they’re going to recognize taxpayer-funded profit [from aspects of the settlement].”
Pass the popcorn…! ;-)
Check out this comprehensive report submitted to the Sec. of the Army on June 8th, 2005…! (PDF, 35 pgs)
I’m beginning to lose count of all the sundry woes of honeybees uncovered here recently.
Is it a coincidence I haven’t seen a single honeybee yet this season (between Boston and Cape Cod)? Just a few bumblebees, and they’re getting scarce too.
All those stories about the bumblebees recently have really been something, maa8722. I hope this latest represents a huge find and they will be able to stop so much of what they call “colony collapse”. Hopefully, somebody who’s well informed about the bees will stop by and explain all this to us.
This morning I was out working in the yard, talking to the honeybees that were just everywhere, buzzing about (I think there’s a hive somewhere in the neighborhood). And then this headline came along: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2012/06/bees-attack-dogs-workers-in-ventura-county-.html
I do hope you see lots of honeybees and bumblebees soon.
What’s so tragic is that Hawaii’s Queen Bees were the most sought after export…
Now, with 4 Isles experiencing the varroa mite infestation, and, even a new Hive Beetle, we’re so f*cked…! 8-(
Edit:*heh* I suppose there’s still Hope in Dope, tho…! ;-)
And then there’s this about bees. There really are people this earth would be much better off without their being. The saying “”Any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankind; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.” I just don’t see applying to those kind of individuals.
Thanks.
Well, now I’m totally bummed. Not even John Donne can help us with this, huh, ubetchaiam?
Hope–especially on Maui.
Thnx, CTuttle.
*heh* I’m rather partial to the Big Isle’s products, tho…! ;-)
:)
This is a must-listen-to BBC debate between AEI’s Richard Perle and Antiwar’s Jason Ditz…!
Very interesting. Mahalo, CTuttle.
Here’s my favorite photo of Perle.
Lotsa people in my neighborhood (Buena Vista/Haight-Ashbury) raise urban bees. Seems they thrive because there are a lot of flowers and such, especially in the urban setting. I would love to do this.
*heh* All that Flower Power to sustain, eh…? ;-)
Now why would he remind me of Mr. Burns…?
We also just got some coyote pups now in Golden Gate Park. Animal control experts say they stay, they present no threat. But they help check the population of raccoons, skunks, foxes and feral cats…which means a boost to songbirds, and ground-nesting birds.
There’s a similar photo of one of the Nazis, if I remember correctly, sitting awkwardly like that. Can’t find it; will keep on looking.
Are the buffalos still there?
Not clicking on that link – enough news about horrible human beings and harm to other living creatures.
However, re: knowledge about bees – our own eCAHNomics has been keeping bees for, I think, three years now. She described her adventures and what she’s learned about keeping them healthy in a diary here several months ago. Clicking on her name anywhere should eventually lead you to a link to it. Very informative. She has a professional beekeeper to do the professional work; his philosophy is to nourish the bees above all. For example, they never take all the honey, as many beekeepers do. He alwaysjudges how much the bees will need to get through the winter and leaves that much in the hive.
I wish we all could undertake beekeeping. It might help them survive. ‘Cause if we lose ‘em, we are all fked.
thanks, fatster, for the reference to madison and the bill of rights. i did not know those specific facts.
we know so little of our political history and what we did learn in school is so easy to forget over several (ahem) decades of life.
but the facts and history you bring to light here are central to what this nation is, or until recently, was.
What is this, the seated position of choice for the forces of evil?
Yes. And I believe Bison Tennial still survives, but I may be wrong.
I did enjoy your most recent rant, orion…! ;-)
…we face a host of immoral folk employing morality-based rhetoric, who are intent on destroying, heedlessly, for their own convenience and benefit, the remarkable democratic government we have built on the intellectual foundations laid by jefferson, adams, madison, monroe, hamilton…
Re: finding diaries – I may have given bad instructions. I couldn’t find eCAHN’s diary myself. Maybe she will turn up and give a link. I know you should be able to find any archived diary, but apparently I don’t know to do it.
“we know so little of our political history”
So true, so sadly true, orionATL.
Thnx for your kind words.
and speaking generally,
let me say this fdl column of yours is among the most interesting of all of fdl’s contributors.
the act of guessing at what might be relevant and interesting info from the absolute flood of info available on the internet is extremely useful.
Hahahaha.
There was a follow-up in Letters to the Editor a month or so later that had both photos. Unfortunately–darn it!–I just can’t get to the Letters section, though I did find VF covers and tables of contents for the following months. Oh, well.
(This all assumes the memory is functioning adequately tonight, you understand.)
I’ll try, tejanarusa, but I do get lost maneuvering around FDL, too.
X2…! ;-)
thanks.
but i have to say, on reading my own writing as it appears in your comment:
“jeez, that is one long, tough cheese sandwich to have to consume.” :)
Oh, look, tejanarusa, I think I found it: http://my.firedoglake.com/ecahnomics/2011/04/21/what-i-know-about-honeybees/
*heh* I’m still a Rookie…! Or a Luddite, not sure which…! ;-)
Why, you just set me aglow, orionATL. Many thanks!
You, too, CTuttle.
Here it is! I found it! I found it!
Here’s my second diary with a link to the first.
My bee keeper came today. My bees have swarmed & swarmed this year. He doesn’t know why. Could be warm weather, could be varroa, which feed inside the capped brood cells, and after a swarm there are fewer or none of these for awhile so varroa die.
I’ve got laying queens in both hives, brand new by days, calling them Anne & Alexandra (had to start naming all over again after I ran out of Victoria’s descendants and there have been so many swarms that the generations are now completely muddled). It is early enough in the season that pop of hives should be able to be restored.
Random bit: WI Walker is same Walker family as in George H.W. (for Walker) Bush.
Well, aren’t you sumpthin’! Great timing, interesting articles, eCAHNomics.
Aloha, eCAHN…! The rustle of the
hornswings…? ;-)Perhaps some day you might consider naming one Liliuokalani, in honor of the last Hawaiian queen (unless that’s contrary to custom–maybe CTuttle can advise).
I’m going to go thru the alphabet to keep track of generations, if I can. When I get to L, Luliuokalani will definitely be picked for one of them.
*wow* The seed doesn’t fall far from the tree…! 8-(
*heh* I’m all for it, as long as you spell her name right…! Tho, I’m not particular on the pronunciation…! ;-)
My bee keeping neighbor caught one of the swarms. She gave it to some one, but don’t remember who. She also has a split from my hive done earlier this season.
I’ll get it right when I get to L. Didn’t check the spelling for the comment though.
The story of her overthrow by Dole is fascinating. Part of the normal way of life for Americans. :-(
Trying to read Rise & Fall of Third Reich, over 1500 pages of small print.
Gonna try to turn in now.
Be well.
Faster, nice start on the intro!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Bill_of_Rights
“…and the other technically remains pending before the states.”
Since the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twenty-seventh_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution was one of the two Amendments not passed by the states, originally, does anybody know the language of “other” Amendment still pending technically?
Is it something as this author asserts and what is the actual language of the pending/non ratified amendment?
http://soundingcircle.com/newslog2.php/__show_article/_a000195-000205.htm
“Citizens United” goes opposite of everything Jefferson and Madison desired! I can see why given the circumstances of today, these two Founders and others where proposing this amendment. “The undue influence of the monied interests;” Money and Superpacs? Meanwhile a US Senate permits legalized discrimination against woman in term of equal pay for equal work or better work, because your a woman in 2012? Sounds like the SCOTUS along with Congress are embracing the same inane, asinine, illogic used to protect the institution of slavery, while screwing Dred Scott. I think Jefferson’s and Madison’s concerns should be seriously revisited here. It should be the basis of a platform, a party, a revolution! Is not this why we refer to Jefferson and Madison as “Founders,” while US Congress and the SCOTUS bottom feed, as flounderers?
Ooh, best of luck on trying to fall asleep with all the historical parallels to our current plight…! 8-(
Sweet dreams, M’dear…!
eCAHN! You did turn up! Were your ears burning?
fatster, you found thw diary! How’d you do it?
on edit: eCAHN,I found the Rise and Fall a horrifying page-turner, but my eyes were much younger then. It was the paperback, too, the “pocket”size. Couldn’t read it thst way today. Pleasant dreams!
Just imagine what would’ve transpired under these amendments…
This proposed Amendment would have prohibited “monopolies in commerce.” The amendment would have made it illegal for corporations to own other corporations, or to give money to politicians, or to otherwise try to influence elections.
Corporations would be chartered by the states for the primary purpose of “serving the public good.” Corporations would possess the legal status not of natural persons but rather of “artificial persons.”
Even the Robber Barons wouldn’t have existed…!
Go here, JamesJoyce, it will get you off to a good start.
It strikes at the very heart of the issue back then as today. I would defer to Jefferson and Madison before Mitch, Bonehead, Harry and O. They have already traveled the road. I think John Lewis is the man. He gets it completely. A template for something big has been provided. Might be a little dusty, but very effective as a virus killer, from the founders! I think this is “chum” for an intellectual feeding frenzy for sharks in this tank! Run with it please…….
And here’s a goodie:
“I hope we shall . . . crush in its birth the aristocracy of our moneyed corporations, which dare already to challenge our government to a trial of strength, and bid defiance to the laws of our country.”
Whoo boy! Jefferson wrote that in a letter to George Logan in Nov 1816.
The site I’m sending you to, JamesJoyce, is the authority. People have taken quotations from others and ascribed them to Jefferson and some have just made shit up and ascribed it to Jefferson. The site I’m sending you to is the real deal. You might want to bookmark it.
It’s been a good evening, folks, and I’m quite worn out. At least I found the Perle and Goebbels photos and the Jefferson quote. Now, I gotta bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight.
It wasn’t killed in the cradle. Our undoing.
Lincoln lamented about “enthroned corporations?”
Ike’s “MICC?”
Bookmarked!
yup….
I doubt that it’s random.
Thanks for the article about the Zombie Canadian internet spying law.
That’s the type that evokes a big “Grrrrrrr.”
Good morning, mafr!
morning to you as well. noticed some coyote remarks, above, we have coyotes, coyote wolf hybrids, and wolves living right out back.
Canada is still quite wild.
I guess we already knew this:
“U.S. President Barack Obama told a delegation of the U.S. Orthodox Jewish community at the White House on Tuesday that his administration is decidedly more attentive to Israel than it is to the Palestinians.”
http://www.haaretz.com/jewish-world/jewish-world-news/obama-to-u-s-orthodox-jews-my-administration-is-more-attentive-to-israel-than-to-palestinians.premium-1.434680
great quote of Obama from the article, which should give a few chuckles:
“Obama said he is a person of deep religious conviction and a strong supporter of causes of conscience”
har.
Fatster, you remind me of a good librarian always know where the good books/links are.
Wow. I have bumblebees and hummingbirds living out back, mafr, so your fauna sound verrrrrry impressive in contrast.
So, the obvious has been uttered. That should help a lot as word gets spread around the ME. Thnx so much for the link.
got cougar scratch marks on a tree in the yard.
had a hippie living in a tent in the back once too, for a summer.
yes the commenters at the link looked to be mostly arabic names, so they noticed it. Barrack Obama, diplomat and statesman.
Everybody, certainly including yourself, contributes to keeping all of us informed, mafr. Many of us come fully equipped with insatiable curiosity, it seems.
Who scared who off–the cougar or the hippie?
Cougar was just passing through.
The hippie spent the summer, had a gas barbecue, a tent, and a bicycle. The ladies caught some glimpses of the young guy, and thought he was well worth keeping around.
He worked at the toll both local park. no mess when he left, so it was ok.
Aw, what a cool story.
If Saudi Arabia decided to actually get behind the Palestinians, it would take about a month to get their land back, their statehood, and their borders secured.
:)
Aloha, fatster…! This has my blood boiling today…
Why Obama Will Free Jonathan Pollard…
astounding.
Please take that link to today’s Roundup, CTuttle. If you’d be so kind–please.
