I rarely use this space to promote television shows. But tonight, longtime blogger, former policy advisor to Alan Grayson, and Roosevelt Institute fellow Matt Stoller will appear on a broadcast television show on the major cable network F/X.
Stoller acts as what amounts to the sidekick on Brand X with Russell Brand, featuring the British actor and comedian. The late-night show premieres tonight at 11pm ET. Stoller’s brother, Nick, directed Russell Brand in two movies, but the duo met at Zuccotti Park during Occupy Wall Street, and generated the idea for this show there.
I saw a live preview of this show back in February in Los Angeles, and I can say that it represents a major shift in the range of opinions allowed on broadcast television. What passes for “liberal” on TV and in most of our media is extremely narrowed and constrained, with views very much in line with the political establishment. Heck, Richard Cohen is still seen as a liberal voice on the Washington Post editorial page. But this show, if the previews are any indication, will deconstruct the media and describe its narratives, in ways we haven’t really seen before. Brand dominates the show, and it’s also extremely funny. But Stoller provides the intellectual ballast. In the show I previewed, Brand and Stoller took a story about indecent exposure at a public library – obviously a topic tailor-made for predictable jokes – and compellingly framed it as a story about discrediting public services like libraries.
This varies greatly from the type of media analysis seen on, say, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, which primarily points at media stupidity, without dredging down into the underlying narratives.
You can read more about Brand X With Russell Brand here. I think you’ll all like it very much. Check it out tonight.

Before this, is Chris Hayes perhaps the most liberal host allowed on “regular” TV?
Not at all surprised that the limits of acceptable liberal discourse are allowed by the television suits to be expanded by a furriner and a DFH. That’s very exciting news; I wasn’t going to watch Brand X but I will now.
Brand was ridiculed on Late Night by Letterman last year. My impression was that Letterman couldn’t figure out why Brand was “up and coming”. Pathetic and embarrassing.
Brand made some remarks recently that were off-putting to me. IIRC, it was something “warmongerish” or perhaps “Manifest Destiny-ish”.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Brand sucks (up to the establishment in the end).
If Stoller is a genuine liberal (not an Obamabot drone) he may have a hard time working with the fame-seeking Brand.
stollar is not a DFH. ive always considered him kind of a tool
Hope it turns out well. I don’t watch broadcast television, haven’t for over 20 years, so I won’t see it -
(have we noticed yet that it seems that liberal commentary has to be encapsulated within comedy most of the time to be allowed in public view? I think that Rachael-what’s-her-face is probably the only person on TV who is allowed to be liberal and serious at the same time.)
Hayes is a liberal in the sense that, by virtue of having arms and a human head, I am a centaur
WTF
I don’t watch much tv, so I’m totally unqualified to “comment.” Yet I feel compelled to say that I can hardly see fame-whore Brand doing much “good” for a so-called “liberal” perspective, or really being some kind of “radical” who gets liberal viewpoints out there in a new way that’s meaningful.
If I’m wrong, then: good.
I kind of doubt it, however.
yes.
So-called “liberals” are premitted to be court jesters, and that’s about it.
Say what you will about bombastic Keith Olbermann, in his own way, he tried to be serious with a liberal perspective, but he’s now gotten canned from two so-called “liberal” networks.
Rachel not-very-liberal is still on MSBC and permitted to be serious because she’s no longer “liberal,” imo. But she is intelligent. Sad to say that, imo, she’s just a shill for the 1% by going along to get along, but I guess a girl’s gotta earn a living.
Sorry, tried to watch it last night but couldn’t put up with Brand for more than a couple of minutes. Thought about hitting the mute until Stoller was speaking, but then realized that I’d miss the setup or the question, so…Pasadena on the whole thing. Caught a late repeat of Swamp People.
I also watched it last night.
Jon Stewart needn’t worry. Brand is almost unwatchable.
