In his first interview since being held in contempt by the House of Representatives, Attorney General Eric Holder charges that he has been turned into a symbol by the Republican Party, as a means to attack the President. In doing so, he veers close to the kind of conspiracy theories that have characterized the Republican approach to the Fast and Furious scandal.
In his first interview since Thursday’s vote, Holder said lawmakers have used an investigation of a botched gun-tracking operation as a way to seek retribution against the Justice Department for its policies on a host of issues, including immigration, voting rights and gay marriage. He said the chairman of the committee leading the inquiry, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), is engaging in political theater as the Justice Department tries to focus on public safety.
“I’ve been doing all of these things all the time Darrell Issa and his band have been nipping at my heels,” a defiant Holder said. “They’ve been nipping, but I’ve been walking.”
The attorney general has long been a lightning rod for Republican lawmakers’ anger toward the Obama administration. But Holder said the debate over documents related to the gun operation, known as “Fast and Furious” — along with the National Rifle Association’s attempts to make it an electoral issue — have made matters worse.
“I’ve become a symbol of what they don’t like about the positions this Justice Department has taken,” he said. “I am also a proxy for the president in an election year. You have to be exceedingly naive to think that vote was about . . . documents.”
I don’t really think the contempt vote was about documents, though I do favor the GOP going to court to clear up the executive privilege issues. But saying that the contempt vote was about the Justice Department’s work on voter suppression stretches it a bit. I can buy the idea that it’s to embarrass the Administration and the President in an election year – the GOP has been quite explicit about that. But that it’s payback for voting rights cases? I think that’s too similar to saying that the Fast and Furious scandal was about creating an environment acceptable to gun control legislation.
Anyway, the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department has taken the lead on the voter suppression cases. I’m sure Holder has played a role in that, even if it’s one of not interfering. But he’s not the main driver.
The whole contempt spectacle is a pretty sorry one. Republicans could have gone to civil court over the documents without holding Holder in contempt. But it’s a sign of the bloodsport in Washington.

No, the GOP is attacking him for the sole purpose of hurting Obama’s relection chances. They haven’t even mentioned their voter supression agenda, Holder just pulls it in from left field.
I would submit that the GOP would hate on Holder as long as he’s Obama’s stooge, regardless of if he’s fighting their voter supression.
And nobody defends him because there are no banksters in jail, no torturers in jail, no exxon execs in Jail, and no war criminals in jail.
Boxturtle (I guess dealing with Manning is taking all his time)
Bloodsport, that’s right. I could be persuaded about the anti-voter suppression work of DOJ, except that Issa and his wingnuts started on the F&F long before the recent voter roll purges, etc. that DOJ has pushed back on.
It’s clear enought that both Obama and Holder were major targets of the gun-wingnuts in particular (though not only them) from the beginning.
Gee, I wondere what they have in common, besides being lawyers….
And Box Turtle, yeah, why didn’t they realize there’d be no liberals there to have their backs if they ignored the issues we care about, like, oh, civil rights in general, human rights, eternal detention without charge, etc., etc.
The GOP would love these guys if they were GOP and, um, yeah, what is that other thing that gets those people so upset?
He didn’t raise the racist card? How white of him.
Maybe the GOP hates him bc he is raiding legal mj clinics.
A Republican held Congress cites the U.S. attorney general for contempt that was appointed by a Democratic president. This play has been used before. Just turn Eric Holder into a white woman and change the name to Janet Reno and we will be back to 1998. Similarly, John Ashcroft was the target for the Democrats when they held the house. The cycle of stupidity goes unbroken.
Eric, you have to be exceedingly naive to think anyone is going to defend you.
Has the Republican House actually filed papers in court?
I remember when Democrats were grandstanding about Alberto Gonzales, but they never even took a vote on contempt of Congress.
Would Republicans risk taking away executive privileges from a future Republican President?
I will be surprised if it makes it to court.
Holder is 100% right.
Some one might play a dirge on the world’s smallest violin for him.
Today is Assange’s 41st birthday.
Some will defend him because they’re told to. Others will defend him because they must protect Obama. Others will defend him because they choose to see only the FnF issue and not all the other things he has (or hasn’t) done.
The only defenders he need are himself, since he controls the DoJ, and the president, who can fire him and prevent congress from removing him.
Boxturtle (The rest of us can go suck rocks)
I’ll play backup, I got my kazoo right here.
Boxturtle (SHREEEEEE SQUAK SQUAK)
Isn’t it refreshing to have an AG whose claim to fame is being a defender of corporate sponsored death squads? Of course that was in Colombia, which is not to be confused with the “real America”, USA,Inc.
Only if you add “wing” to the word “right”. He, like Rahm and Obama, is another corporate prostitute.
The NRA targeted this operation in ads long ago saying Obama was using gun-running to create gun control. Issa’s job was to impeach Obama. The NRA needs to be investigated. 85% of the guns in Mexico come from the US. Kids in AZ (18) were buying large amounts of guns and reselling them in the parking lot. According to the ATF, AZ refused to investigate. Is this a profit center for NRA clients? The GOP flunkies in Congress were able to get 17 Democrats to vote for this witch-hunt because the NRA counted their vote in their approval process. Between the NRA, Norquist, ALEC and the billionaires, who runs this country?
When you get too far right, you lose all your friends. The people on the right already got theirs – included in the memo from Rush. And O and Holder are not on it. Who the hell wants them on the left? Is it lonely out there boys?
Hope he’s celebrating in Ecuador, and not just the embassy in London. I keep hoping they disguised him and took him there when the ambassador was ordered home for consultation.
Bloodsport? It’s probably just more Kabuki. Did anyone notice that the USA just sent more naval ships to the Persian Gulf to “reassure” Israel and Saudi Arabia and further intimidate Iran? Another show of force to dissuade Iran from pursuing the uranium enrichment to which they’re entitled by virtue of being signatories to the NPT.
“The NRA targeted this operation in ads long ago saying Obama was using gun-running to create gun control. Issa’s job was to impeach Obama. The NRA needs to be investigated. 85% of the guns in Mexico come from the US.”
So the Obama administration and the NRA are co-conspirators in Fast and Furious shipping guns to criminal gangs to Mexico? If you want such an investigation, you should support rather than oppose the release of docs about who exactly is shipping the guns to those criminal gangs.
“Kids in AZ (18) were buying large amounts of guns and reselling them in the parking lot.”
Maybe they were part of Fast and Furious.
“Is this a profit center for NRA clients?”
Obama isn’t saying how much he’s profiting the gun corporate lobby with his Fast and Furious program, which again, if you actually wanted your question answered, you’d want the docs released.
“Between the NRA, Norquist, ALEC and the billionaires, who runs this country?”
That’s exactly why you should support this contempt for failure to turn over docs that would show that.
that is one reason. the others are
1. he has power. they do not like a black man with power. the go wanted to bing him down a peg and not be beHOLDER to him! lol
2. to hurt obama. another black man with power who they want to bring down even more than they do holder. they wanted to make it look like the obama administration has no scruples. you know, like that last administration that they bowed down to and worshiped.
There you go again, pick, pick pick…… /s
Holder may well be coming under attack because of his attempts to thwart voter list purges and what not.
But the reason so many people don’t care what happens to him is because he’s a horse’s ass. With Holder at the helm of the DOJ, fewer people have been prosecuted for criminal activity regarding Wall Street’s manipulations and malfeasance that has bankrupted our nation than at any point in the last 20 years. But he did manage to find the energy to go after medical marijuana clinics in the states where the voters had approved of those clinics.
I not only hope his political career is sabotaged, I hope there is a very special place in hell waiting for him.
You’re right. It ain’t political and it ain’t racial. That should make him feel better.
You’re responding to someone who is suffering from partisanship and lacks the perception necessary to discern the Kabuki Theatre that is our government’s SOP.
Right. In case you haven’t noticed this administration has dedicated itself to legalizing the criminal policies of the preceding administration. You’ve obviously been fooled again.
If he’s forced to return to the private sector, he’ll just resort to defending US corporations that employ para-military death squads to destroy union activity in developing nations. He already earned his bona fides defending United Fruit in Colombia.
So I guess that cynical deal Holder made to not prosecute American war criminals, contrary to law and international treaty so that he and Obama wouldn’t be persecuted by the Republican’ts is working out as well as could be expected? The financial fraudsters get off scott free too, so that he and Obama stay safe?
America gets to be a nation of war criminals, and business as usual?
Oh, Box turtle, how I have missed your insights!
We will be there, and have their backs, because the alternative is worse.
Another cynical decision about the (minimal) value of progressives from Obama and Holder.
Or a french horn.
This mouse has a tiny french horn, your argument is invalid.
(not YOUR argument, eCAHNomics, but Holder’s argument)
But you can’t actually legalize them.
U.S. Constitution, (Article VI, Clause 2) “[...] all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land;” (aka Supremacy Clause)
“Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment” treaty which was signed April 18, 1988 and ratified by the Senate on October 21, 1994, which states in Article 2, Clause 1 “Each State Party shall take effective legislative, administrative, judicial or other measures to prevent acts of torture in any territory under its jurisdiction.”
Article 2, Clause 2 requires “No exceptional circumstances whatsoever, whether a state
of war or a threat of war, internal political instability or any other public
emergency, may be invoked as a justification of torture.”
Article 2, Clause 3 requires “An order from a superior officer or a public authority may not be invoked as a justification of torture.”
Yet Holder repeatedly does exactly that. “It would be unfair to prosecute dedicated men and women working to protect America for conduct that was sanctioned in advance by the Justice Department.”
It was against the law then. It is against the law now. Luckily, murder and torture are outside the statute of limitations.
“Oh what a tangled web we weave when we practice to deceive”. It’s been so long since any one told the truth, that they certainly have me fooled.
I don’t understand the “Holder Obama” relationship. Can the president stifle the Attorney General, or is he stifled by choice?
This new world is “money green”, race is just a smoke screen.
The documents may contain information that could get agents killed. I don’t believe this is more than a witch-hunt by the GOP. If anyone profits from the operation it would be the manufacturers of guns that are the base of the NRA. Don’t believe what the NRA and GOP tell you. Holder already released 8000 documents. I want Holder to work on the voter suppression, not this diversion.
Bush/Cheney shredded the document you’re referring to and replaced the Bill of Rights with the Patriot Act. Obama and Congress flushed what remained.
Your comments would find more favor at the Church of Obama, aka DailyKos. Your lack of knowledge and perception mark you as a “bot”. You sound like a “megaphone” for Obama, and unlike you, the majority here are objective in.re. our system of government, not subjective and partisan like you.
