Backed by a larger caucus, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi will stay onin the post for another two years. She will make the announcement at this hour. Nobody will challenge her for the Democratic leadership position.
A delay in leadership elections and the rumor mill pointed to the possibility that Pelosi would step down from leadership or retire from Congress, after Democrats failed to capture the majority. In that event, the likely successor would have been Steny Hoyer, the moderate House Minority Whip. Progressives urged Pelosi to stay on in her post, and they got their wish. Adam Green of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee immediately gushed at the outcome:
Thank you, thank you, thank you Nancy Pelosi. The mandate of the election was to tax the rich and protect programs like Medicare and Social Security from benefit cuts. Steny Hoyer would likely not have respected that mandate, but given her track record, we have high hopes for Nancy Pelosi. Today is a good day for progressive power.
I agree that Democrats are likely to maneuver a bit differently with Pelosi in the leadership, although the minority doesn’t allow for too much maneuvering in a majoritarian institution, in any case.
Pelosi will have a 201-member caucus in the minority, if all uncalled races currently hold their positions. That’s before potential vacancies; Jesse Jackson Jr. may be headed to jail in a campaign finance scandal, and various Massachusetts Democrats may chase an open Senate seat in a special election, if John Kerry is tapped for a cabinet post. But the baseline number if all the races hold is 234 Republicans and 201 Democrats. That means that Democrats would need an additional 17 seats in the midterms to recapture the majority.
Democrats also got boosted by one member in the Senate today. Independent Angus King (I-ME) said he would join the Democratic caucus, saying that “affiliating with the majority makes sense.” That gives Democrats 55 seats in the Senate, versus 45 seats for the Republicans.

I’m just glad Pelosi’s not the very definition of a limousine liberal.
Yeah, didn’t her net worth double in the past four years. What a racket
Oh thank God! I can sleep well tonight. Phew.
reply to Eric Patton@1
minus the ‘liberal’!
Initially, Pelosi said that she would never allow passage of cuts to SS/Medicare. Then, when Obama made his offer of a Grand Bargain (for him and the Repubs) but Great Betrayal for us, Pelosi came around to saying she would support Obama.
Where does she stand now? Does she have a stand on this or is she going to carry water for the Corporatists in the party and Obama?
And…WTH can we do to change Dem minds if they’ve decided to screw us, the lower economic quintile Americans?
Legal insider trading can do that for you.
Well said…has anyone noticed that since ordinary Americans started voting for these very rich people who are supposedly “progressive” their net worth has gone through the roof whilst ordinary Americans have gotten poorer.Wake up to the scam people.
The core focus of rich people & ordinary people are not made of the same
fabric. And thus rich people are not progressive.
Re: Jesse Jackson Jr — If he is, as some have said, suffering from bipolar mental disease, the manic phase often results in the person spending wildly. And his brain is telling him it’s only logical to do so.
So, I wonder if that’s what might have happened to him and then to his campaign chest….
A friend’s brother bought several Rolexes during one manic phase. Lately, he tried to buy an expensive condo, a Porsche (succeeded, used one), and, now that his finances have dwindled, he was down to buying two –count ‘em! TWO!– Trek bicycles for well over $2000.
And no one can stop him when he’s on that manic high. Or get him to a doctor to tweak his meds when he needs that done. In the depression swing after the high, he’s lethargic, tired beyond measure, unable to function. There are a few times during the transitions when he’s more normal, but that ends quickly and the next manic phase swings him up and out of control.
It started with my not being able to listen to their voices without literally becoming physically ill. Now I can’t even look at their pictures.
And, so have you seen the video clip of Pelosi being asked by the evermore stupid, immature, and arrogant Luke Russet? (Huff Po is running it.) After duly recognizing the question putting her down as “too old” as offensive, she actually gave a non-offensive and rather wise answer. Quite the contrast.
I made my screensaver Jill Stein in handcuffs at the KXL pipeline protest in Winsboro and just look at that while i’m listening. If that helps.
Yawn. Oh please Nancy, don’t leave us. Please don’t leave us. Don’t you have more money to take? More deals to make for special interests and pay lip service to the issues of the day?
How about those war crimes charges against Bush and friends. Great job Nancy.
Believe me, you ain’t the only one.
These people are absolutely disgusting.
Another lesser evil scenario.
Pelosi is only good in comparison to the alternatives; Hoyer and Wasserman Shultz. Yuch!
You left out Poke in the eye with a sharp stick…no wait you said lesser of two evils right.
What’s that John Lennon song???
Mama don’t goooooooooooooooooaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !!!!
meh… same old, diff’rent day. The 99% is screwed, no matter what.
Yeah, when I heard Hoyer’s name bandied about, it sure didn’t fill me with happiness & joy. Geez, what (non)choices we got.
Heh, what do you have against pokes in the eye with sharp sticks?
Hey, let’s look on the bright side, people.
At least she’s not Steny Hoyer.

That is like getting O.J. Simpson as your babysitter but saying at least he’s not Jerry Sandusky.
