Senator-elect Elizabeth Warren officially received her committee assignments today, and she will sit on the Senate Banking Committee, with key oversight over Wall Street and the financial system. Progressives agitated for weeks for Warren to get this spot, and in the end it wasn’t that difficult a lift. I’m looking forward to future hearings from the committee, especially when Wall Street’s finest makes the trip to testify.
Warren joins Joe Manchin and Heidi Heitkamp as new members on the Banking Committee, which will still be chaired by Tim Johnson. Manchin, the most conservative member of the incoming Democratic caucus, could be a counterpoint to Warren on the committee. Heitkamp is an interesting addition. Her state of North Dakota has a state-owned public bank, the only one of its kind in the United States, which has thrived during the Great Recession. You can attribute most of that to the economic boom in North Dakota generally, thanks to the explosion of oil production in the Bakken shale region. But activists like Ellen Brown have lauded the idea of public banking, and Heitkamp may serve as an interesting choice, given the Bank of North Dakota’s prominence in that debate.
In addition to the Banking Committee, Warren will sit on the Senate HELP Committee – now a very liberal group, with Warren, Tammy Baldwin, Chris Murphy, Chairman Tom Harkin, Bernie Sanders, Sheldon Whitehouse and Al Franken serving on it – and the Senate Committee on Aging. Despite her law professor profile, she missed out on a Judiciary Committee spot – the one opening was filled by incoming Hawaii Senator Mazie Hirono.
Senator-elect Tammy Baldwin got a spot on the Senate Budget Committee, which should sober her Wisconsin Senate colleague Ron Johnson, who doesn’t think she can handle big ol’ numbers, being a girl and all. Baldwin will also serve on HELP, the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, and the Committee on Aging.
New chairpersons include Ron Wyden (Energy), Tom Carper (Homeland Security), Bill Nelson (Aging), Patty Murray (Budget), Maria Cantwell (Indian Affairs) and Bernie Sanders (Veteran’s Affairs).
I’ll put the full roster of committee assignments on the flip.

How they don’t paint her into a corner and neuter her.
Clone her and appoint the clones to every position in Government.
Is there any gerrymandering of committee assignments: all those liberals in HELP? Were I in the senate and of a mind, I’d try to bunch up the opposition in one small spot.
BANKING – 113th
Tim Johnson – CHAIRMAN
If I had to guess, I’d say he’ll be leaning on Warren just a bit. She should tell him to go pound sand…
INTELLIGENCE – 113th
Feinstein – CHAIRMAN
Vomit.
Not if she wants anything for MA, she won’t. There are so many ways to turn the screws. She should probably caucus privately with Gillibrand, who seems very adept at dealing with difficult and domineering senate overlords.
No Judiciary spot?
Wouldn’t want her exposing how utterly in the pocket of the 1% Leahy and Schumer are now, would we?
Is DIFi really still sentient? Those pictures, that calcified mind……
The banks get a little kick to the keister with Liz there. It’s just a symbolic slap, to let them know not to be late on their bribes.
Well congratulations to Liz…However, little else will change..rich people in the US congress are not wholeheartedly going to craft legislation penalizing their class.
Somehow Americans can’t see to understand that they have been duped, electing super wealthy people to advocate for ordinary & poor Americans will never work…It’s like having lions advocating vegan-ism.
Moreover look at the corrupt clique she will be surrounded by,Feinstein,Boxer,Leahy Schumer, etc, etc.
The banksters would have preferred her to be in that committee. She’s now exactly where they don’t want her to be.
What makes you think they won’t do that?
I hope people who expect so much from Warren are not disappointed.
I ‘fat fingered’ my post. It should read:
I hope they don’t . . .
