Senator Daniel Inouye, Hawaii’s senior Senator and an American war hero, died today at the age of 88. He suffered complications from a respiratory problem and was in the hospital for the past few days.
Inouye was the President pro tempore of the Senate – fourth in line for the Presidency. He served as a Senator since 1962 and represented Hawaii as a legislator since 1954, since before it was a state. He is a giant in Hawaii politics and one of the longest-serving members of the Senate in history.
Inouye also chaired the Senate Appropriations Committee. With his absence, the chair probably falls to Barbara Mikulski, though Patrick Leahy or Tom Harkin could take it, which would set up a real scramble.
Just to get the crass politics out of the way, Hawaii is one of three states where the Governor makes a temporary appointment of a new Senator based off of a list of three people submitted by Inouye’s party, the Democrats. The special election to replace the last two years of Inouye’s term wouldn’t take place until November 2014. There’s some trepidation that Governor Neil Abercrombie would select Blue Dog Ed Case to replace Inouye. There’s almost no chance of that happening. The Hawaii Democratic Party doesn’t like Case for constantly challenging the candidates they’ve supported in recent Congressional elections. My money would be on Rep. Colleen Hanabusa.
Now, to celebrate the life of Daniel Inouye. A Nisei Japanese-American, Inouye was a medical volunteer at Pearl Harbor and then served in the US Army in 1943. He was gravely wounded twice and lost his arm at one point, yet remained in the military until 1947 and received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He ended up going to Congress, chairing the Intelligence Committee, Indian Affairs Committee and Appropriations Committee at various points in his career. He was instrumental in special committees investigating Watergate and the Iran-Contra Affair. He was a fixture in politics for over 50 years.
Rest in peace.

Rest in peace.
Husband & I were just speculating about who could possibly be appointed by Gov. Abercrombie, and came up with:
**Brian Schatz, HI Lt. Governor [a good guy]
**Coleen Hanabusa – just re-elected as HI Dem Congresswoman
**Tulsi Gabbard — highly unlikely; she was just elected Congresswoman, to fill the seat of Mazie Hirono, who moved up to Senator this year. [Mazie will now be Hawaii's senior senator.]
**Mufi Hannaman — jeeze, I hope not. A real tool. Also, Abercrombie ran against Mufi, so hopefully not likely.
**Ed Case — as you noted, he’s a Blue Dog and has pissed off Dems no end. He can run, and even get elected, when he’s backed by developers’ money. In an appointment situation, I think he’s toast.
Inouye was Chief Don of the Dem Party in Hawaii. Maybe there are some folks from “within,” or on his staff, that will be on the list.
Hawaii’s days at the pork barrel trough are over, and it’s gonna be tough times for the state. Inouye always bragged about how much $$$$ he directed back to the state. [He and Ted Stevens of AK were BFF, and masters of this thievery.]
Thanks for your write-up, DDay.
I was shocked that DoD spending is 18% of the Hawaiian economy. That said, “tough times” in Hawaii is better than the best of times in many other places. I mean, median household net worth is still 50% higher than any other state.
Household net worth may be higher but cost of living in the islands is 30% – 35% higher than in the most expensive parts of the mainland (i.e., NYC, DC, LA, SF, etc)
Aloha and RIP Senator
Inouye was very much a supporter of the military. In my opinion, he did there bidding back in 2009 when it was his amendment that stripped the funding for closing Guantanamo from a supplemental appropriations bill.
There was more, too, including the collaboration of Inouye’s Chief of Staff, Patrick De Leon, in a secret program at Gitmo on “deception detection.” Furthermore, according to a former top member of the American Psychological Assn, Inouye’s office was key in pushing through interrogation policies for DoD. See article Jason Leopold and I wrote back in 2010.
Otherwise, yes, as a matter of humanity, RIP.
Well, with Pearl Harbor, Hickam, Ft Shafter, Kaneohoe, CINCPAC, CINCPACAF still being active the military pork will still be fairly strong.
I believe that with Daniel Inouye’s passing, Frank Lautenberg is the last surviving WWII veteran in the Senate. I believe that Rep. John Dingell is the only WWII veteran in the House.
The last serving WW II vet in the Congress, I believe. He’s seen a lot and I hope his memoirs focus on those controversial changes. I’ll read it. He served his state’s interests. For better or worse, it seems. The Pacific Blue States will have so many women Senators, if Hanabusa is picked, it’s remarkable. Aloha, Senator RIP
I wasn’t sure about Dingell, good call. Frank, too? We’ll my uncle is in his early 90s. He came ashore on Omaha Beach. Tough bunch, for sure.
Possibly the last Senator to be able to say, “I was there at statehood”. At least until DC or Puerto Rico.
This a sad loss for America. Daniel Inouye was a true war hero, and as far as I know, the only American Senator to ever be declared a Badass of the Week:
Click over and read how he got it.
A Standard Bearer for the Greatest Generation.
Akaka is retiring but is also a WWII vet
Thanks for the clarification dakine. My father, and Mrs. Tiger’s, were WWII veterans. It’s a bittersweet feeling to see the last of them pass on.
I’ve always had my beefs with Inouye, and never voted for him since I came to Paradise in 1982. Biggest beefs have been the H-3 freeway and the totally insane rail project for the Leeward area on Oahu And I am becoming aware of other dirty stuff he’s done from time to time.
Nonetheless, this is a big blow at an extremely inopportune time. As someone recently pointed out, the state’s three biggest revenue sources have been the military, tourism, and Sen Inouye.
As a low-ranking Dem official, I have tried to influence the discussion of a successor by suggesting, first, former Gov Ben Cayetano, a totally decent man who was libeled by developer and union pro-rail money. He would serve as a place-holder and would make some history as the country’s first US Senator of Filipino ancestry. My other cboices, whose names I have thrown into the ring are State Rep. Chris Lee, a young, strong progressive from Kailua-Waimanalo and State Sen Suzanne Chun Oakland, a real liberal with a long legislative record. Maui Mom and C Tuttle, please take note.
