Good evening, all.
News Flash! “The soon to be former blogger, David Dayen, explains what would happen if we went over the ‘fiscal cliff’, why the new Obama offer is so bad, why he Dayen is leaving blogging.” More.
International Developments
❖ Richard Engle, NBC News Chief Foreign Correspondent, and two others “have escaped from heavily-armed captors during a fire-fight five days after being abducted in Syria.” Their captors appear to have been Syrian loyalists.
❖ “Five female Pakistani polio vaccination workers have been fatally shot in a string of co-ordinated attacks–four within 20 minutes across Karachi” and the fifth in Peshawar
❖ “Russia Sends Two Squadrons Of Ships to Syria”.
❖ Another #2. Salah Gasmi, second in command in the Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, was arrested in northern Algeria yesterday.
❖ Increasing jitters about China: ”In a move that prompted a swift and angry response from China, the U.S. has reportedly agreed to substantially increase its military presence n the Philippines”.
❖ Mathieu Ngudjolo Chui, Congolese militia leader, has been ordered released immediately after the International Criminal Court in The Hague acquitted him of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
❖ Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni “has said gay people should not be killed or persecuted, as MPs continue to consider a controversial Anti-Homosexuality Bill.”
International Finance
❖ Standard & Poor’s, powerful ratings agency, has upgraded Greece’s rating from “selective default” to “B-minus”.
❖ Seems UBS could be “slapped with a combined fine of $1.5 billion . . . to settle allegations that it manipulated Libor interest rates”. Some “three dozen bankers and senior managers will be implicated”.
❖ From Mrs. N Turner to UK Prime Minister David Cameron: ”Are the British public now being asked to accept that, despite incontrovertible evidence of multiple criminal acts by bankers, including money-laundering, drug-money-laundering, Libor rigging, multiple frauds and assorted Ponzi schemes, bankers are considered to be immune from prosecution?”
❖ “US banks are making a last-minute push to ease new global liquidity requirements” since they’d have to “come up with an additional $800bn in easy-to-sell assets”.
❖ Through a simple $52,000 bribe in Mexico, a new Wal-Mart sprang up where it should not have been. The New York Times has uncovered much more about how “Wal-Mart de Mexico was an aggressive and creative corrupter, offering large payoffs to get what the law otherwise prohibited.” Update: Wal-Mart Stores may be facing sizable fines as a result of the NYTimes’ investigation.
Money Matters USA
❖ Excellent article by Robert Kuttner criticizing Obama’s proposed “deal” with Boehner, and the support of “supposed” liberals including Robert Greenstein of the Center on Budget and Policy Prorities. “This promises to be an epic showdown. We will soon learn what Obama, the progressive community, and congressional Democrats are made of.”
❖ Another view of the “$290 Billion Of [Obama's] Proposed Spending ‘Cuts”. “Bottom line: We are getting a mini ‘kick the can down the road’ worst case outcome, which will need a new Fiscal Cliff just to deal with the outcome of not resolving this Fiscal Cliff in as little as 12 months.”
❖ Nine data brokerage companies have been ordered by the Federal Trade Commission to reveals “how they harvest and use data on consumers.” The FTC is also curious about whether the firms “let consumers review and correct their personal information or opt out from having their personal information sold.”
Politics USA
❖ Filibuster reform may have to be put on the back-burner if the “fiscal cliff” issue isn’t resolved before January.
❖ Rahmbo got called on the carpet today. Norah O’Donnell of CBS News teevee asked Emanuel about telling Attorney General Erick Holder to “shut the f*ck up” after learning Holder had included banning assault weapons in a speech. Video.
❖ The right-wing “Club for Growth” has warned Senate Republicans to vote “‘NO’ on the Hurricane Sandy relief bill”.
❖ NJ Republican Gov. Chris Christie is likely to be endorsed for a second term by the Laborer’s International Union of North America.
❖ From the Appalachian Trail to the campaign trail: former SC Gov. Mark Sanford is eyeing the House seat Tim Scott (R-SC) vacated when current SC Republican Gov. Nikki Haley appointed him to fill the departing Senator Jim DeMint’s seat. Sanford ran on about ‘redemption’, ‘Second acts’, etc., while ruminating aloud.
❖ Sanford vs. Sanford? There’s speculation that Jenny Sanford, once wife of Mark, just might be interested in running for the House seat vacated by newly-appointed Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), too!
❖ Shelby County [AL] v. Holder is scheduled to go before the US Supreme Court on February 27, 2013. At issue is the provision in the Voting Rights Act that “requires states and counties with a history of racial discrimination to get permission from the federal government before changing their voter laws.”
❖ Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence, Michael Vickers, supposedly leaked “restricted information” to “the makers” of the film “Zero Dark Thirty”. He’s “top intelligence adviser to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and oversees the Pentagon’s vast intelligence operations.” There is concern that referring him to the Justice Dept, as they’re required to do, might hurt the guy’s career!
Gun Corner
❖ A brief history of Australia’s response to the worst massacre in its history–April 28, 1996 when 35 people were killed and 23 wounded. Ten years later, following implementation of controls, homicides by firearm had decreased 59% and suicides by firearm 65%, and there’s not “been a single [mass shooting] in Australia since.”
❖ Gun Owners of America’s executive director, “Larry Pratt tells Chris Matthews that government’s ‘gone overboard’ and gun owners should act”.
❖ OH Republican Gov. John Kasich has rejected all pleas to veto a new concealed carry law and will sign it.
❖ Former AR Republican Gov. Mike Huckabee has expanded his blame for the CT school shootings from not having Gawd in the schools to having “tax-funded abortion pills”–as well as our calling “sinful” acts “normal”.
❖ A “Christian” radio talker, James Dobson, says the US is in “complete disarray” thanks to abortion and threats to the institution of marriage.
❖ OK is considering a law allowing teachers to carry guns in schools. Principals, too.
❖ The Discovery Channel has dumped the reptilian Ted Nugent, as well as “its popular ‘American Guns’ reality show”.
Women & Children
❖ Ireland seems to have finally come around to the minimal–”Ireland to legalise abortions where woman’s life is at risk”. Outrage over the death of Savita Halappanavar, who died in a Galway hospital post-miscarriage because she could not obtain termination, has had its effect.
Heads Up!
❖ And they’re off! Letters to “unsuspecting recipients of this first round of debt forgiveness” from Rolling Jubilee. For $5,000, Strike Debt bought $100,000 “of distressed medical debt owed by 44 people in upstate New York.”
❖ Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) is concerned about the health effects of those airport body scanners imposed upon the American people by the Department of Homeland Security’s Transportation Safety Administration (TSA). According to her, the TSA “has agreed to contract with the National Academy of Sciences to study the health effects of the radiation delivered by the backscatter machines.” Finally!
Planet Earth News
❖ Tom Steyer, head of the huge hedge fund, Farallon Capital Mgt, for Secretary of Energy?
❖ “‘Peak Farmland’ Is Here, Crop Area to Diminish: The amount of land needed to grow crops worldwide is at a peak, and a geographical area more than twice the size of France will be able to return to its natural state by 2060 as a result of rising yields and slower population growth, a group of experts said on Monday.”
Latin America
❖ Mexico’s newly-elected president, Enrique Pena Nieto, “announced the creation of a new national police force as part of efforts to tackle crime and violence,” rather than “tackling the gangs”.
Mixed Bag
❖ “Curiosity Inspects ‘Shaler’ Outcrop on Descent to Yellowknife Bay Drill Target”. Very cool photos–and more to look forward to!

I’ll see your one CEO, f., and raise you two:
because there’s no more room on his Inauguration Committee.
Aloha, fatster…! I have to echo Sam’s emotions on Dday’s impending departure…! 8-(
Gag! Run government like a business, by business and for business. I guess this is just part of the Reagan Republican rap coming outta da White House. People were guessing what the second term would be like–and now we know.
Wheeeeeee! Or maybe that should be Aieeeeeeeee!
Srsly, thanks, allan. If I were a drinkin’ woman . . .
Super bummer, CTuttle. Just major.
Oh, and Aloha back.
Do you have something for cheering us up? Maybe a story about the munchkin? I love munchkin stories.
PS
“because there’s no more room on his Inauguration Committee.”
Nor on his dance card.
How’s about Abby… Troll Spotting…
Regarding increasing jitters about China. . .
Rebuilding a presence in the Philippines is a remarkable notion. Some of the rationale offered for a renewed US presence in SE Asia sounds so familiar.
From a practical angle how would this Philippine adventure be done and at what cost? The two largest overseas bases ever in the US inventory had been on lease from the Philippines — Clark AB and Subic Bay. Both were wrecked in 1991 when Mt Pinatubo blew up. Coincidentally there were negotiations going on then to renew the 1947 agreement, but that process was mooted out by the unexpected eruption. The cost to restore the bases to US standards would have been far more than the real value of the mission there — largely symbolic after Vietnam. It was a revealing moment.
I think this is more about money than anything else, and we are preparing to get screwed big time.

Greetings, Fatster! Your work makes me happy, as always. Thank you!
Why is this first we hear of this? NBC: censoring for the sake of capitulation. It’s not the first time they’ve proven their lack of integrity. The only way to defeat terrorism is to not give in.
Response: Piss off, bloody peasant!
Here is my offering:
Officials Probe Reports Of Riding Of Whale Later Found Dead. On top of some idiot riding a Manatee, we have this crap? Jail time seems to be something that comes to mind.
Eco Friendly Batter Created From Plant Dye.
Rare Chinese Yellow-Headed Box Turtles Hatch At Bronx Zoo
Claim Jumping Urged In Cases Of Termite Gold Mining.
Thnx, CTuttle. That was cute.
Regarding Walmart in Mexico. . .
I’m no Walmart booster, but isn’t bribery necessary for most any US business operating there? Notwithstanding illegality the rule would be not to get caught, rather than not to pay up. Maybe that’s an old wive’s tale. . .
… Coincidentally there were negotiations going on then to renew the 1947 agreement, but that process was mooted out by the unexpected eruption….
*heh* They actually were in the process of kicking us outta P.I. at that juncture, the US was fighting it tooth and nail to stay, when Pinatubo blew…! ;-)
I saw that whale story at some point recently but didn’t get back to read it, so it’s neat that you brought it here, Gothrykke. Anything for fun, huh? Riding a sick whale! I won’t type here what I think about the people who did it. I also will try not to think about humans dragging that poor whale’s carcass around on the beach, then out to sea and now back again. I’ll just say: Arrrrrrgh!
And poor termites–they’re going to get their nests smashed now by a bunch of gold-crazed humans. Not that I get all warm and fuzzy about terminates, but, sheesh!
I was sure curious about the batter made from plant dye, thinking of batter-fried shrimp, etc., but see you just had a little slip-up with the ‘y’.
And, frankly, I find those yellow-headed turtles much more attractive than ol’ Mitch McConnell. Long may they [the yellow-headed turtles] live and breed.
Thnx so much, Gothrykke. So pleased to see you.
Ah, maa8722, but they broke that cardinal rule–they got caught.
Hee hee. Thnx for the Philippines info, too. I’ll be looking at that.
Re: #11
Just my own take. . .
A lot of Filipinos wanted us out, a lot of others wanted dollars. What was going on with their Senate and the Treaty was theater to up the ante. It unexpectedly got waaay too expensive.
That’s my own take. I was stationed there briefly in 1972.
Your take may be correct, though, in the sincerity of the naysayers there. I didn’t reach the same conclusion.
My #14 is re: #11
9 Alternatives to the Chained CPI that would be more fair and not destabilize FDR’s Social Security contract by diverting funds to pay down deficits caused by the Bush tax cuts, two unnecessary wars and the financial meltdown:

Email the WH and your representatives if you haven’t already.
Well, I’m sure there is a batter made from eco friendly dyes, it makes things taste good. But, yes, I missed a Y. So, Y so serious?
*headdesk*
Remember that Marcos had already been sent packing here to the Isles, in ignimonius exile and many of his corrupt cronies from Luzon, the rest of the Country was fed up, except maybe Olongapo…! ;-)
*aargh* Sen. Inouye wrote a letter requesting that Colleen Hanabusa replaces him…! Hello…? Primes the pump for Ed Case to take her seat…! What f*ckery…! I would like to see Abercrombie appoint his Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz to Inouye’s seat…! Keeps our Congressional Delegation intact, and, I’d much rather see Schatz Senator than Hanabusa…!
But those nine things would harm the better-off, bmull. This current game is aimed toward hurting us instead of them.
Srsly, thanks for those suggestions and for reminding us of what we must do.
As I recall Marcos and Duvalier both got in trouble at about the same time on opposite ends of the earth.
I think it was William F Buckley who noticed. . . Both dictators liked to wear a white suit. Haitians didn’t hate Marcos, and Filipinos didn’t hate Duvalier. Maybe the two could have swapped places, been perfectly at home, and started over.
What’s the short version? I’ve been listening for 10 minutes and haven’t heard a word except ads.
Hmmm…
Zbigniew Brzezinski warned fellow elitists that a worldwide “resistance” movement to “external control” driven by “populist activism” is threatening to derail the move towards a new world order…
…Calling the notion that the 21st century is the American century a “shared delusion,” Brzezinski stated that American domination was no longer possible because of an accelerating social change driven by “instant mass communications such as radio, television and the Internet,” which have been cumulatively stimulating “a universal awakening of mass political consciousness.”
The former US National Security Advisor added that this “rise in worldwide populist activism is proving inimical to external domination of the kind that prevailed in the age of colonialism and imperialism.”
Brzezinski concluded that “persistent and highly motivated populist resistance of politically awakened and historically resentful peoples to external control has proven to be increasingly difficult to suppress.”
Although Brzezinski delivered his comments in a neutral tone, the context of the environment in which he said them allied to his previous statements would indicate that this is not a celebration of “populist resistance” but a lament at the impact it is having on the kind of “external control” Brzezinski has repeatedly advocated.
Fancy that, eh…?
Here’s Credo’s petition for No Cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security:

String of pearls.
Plus Zbiggie’s 1997 book that argued that whoever controlled the Eurasian land mass controlled the world. Not arguing the truth or falsity of the proposition, just condensing what Zbiggie allegedly propounds (haven’t read it myself).
China & Russia have already built high speed freight rail across that landmass to deliver Chinese goods to European markets so China could not be squeezed by U.S. at choke points enumerated in sea routes in string of pearls link. Also pipelines. Gazprom is largest whatever (gas or oil or both?) in the world.
My own addition. Ukraine & other other areas in that landmass used to be breadbasket, so ability to reinstate farming is clear threat to U.S. hegemony. Not to mention ability of China to spread out its pop from coast.
Up to 18 minutes. Rescue me. Why is dday leaving?
Sam is relentless, M’dear…! ;-0
WTF does that mean? And why should I care.
25 minutes, but who’s counting.
dday arguing trial balloon. Who does he think he’s kidding. The SS outcome is carved in stone and the only thing “they” are trying to figure out is the best way to shove it down our throats.
Well, why are ya even listening then, eCAHN…? ;-)
BC I want to know why dday is leaving, wh I asked several comments ago. You apparently listened to the whole thing so if you would provide the A I could avoid the agony. Or tell me how I can fast forward.
Got to it. dday says “That’s enough. He has a wife he wants to check in on. Blogging requires inspiration.”
Other things he wants to do involving political advocacy wh involves getting off treadmill.
Groundhogs day analogy. Can’t say I haven’t experienced that.
MU (marginal utility) of blogging has declined dramatically. Wow, couldn’t agree more, though would differ with dday’s analysis of why that is.
Fatster, thanks for the link to Australia and guns. A lot can be learned from that.
It would be worthwhile looking for background on the shooters there (i.e., prior to their ban), and the apparent lack of substitute methods of carnage sought out once guns were eliminated. Maybe I’ll Google tomorrow.
The Australian buy back was a great idea. My own sense, though, is that the US is too ingrained a gun culture to be able to sieve a lot out that way — maybe it’s worth a try. Our own ten year experiment with a ban didn’t accomplish a lot due to exceptions and grandfathering. I think we need a bigger wedge next, and with no sunset.
FBI is looking into a violent video gaming obsession with Lanza. No detail there yet, but it seems intuitive (to me anyway) that a few really unbalanced types could be worn down and set off that way. Scroll down to near the end — not much more than a reference to it. . .
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/9753961/Connecticut-school-shooting-police-fail-to-recover-data-from-Adam-Lanzas-computer.html
In my own humble estimation, Dday needs a hiatus, I truly think he’ll be back in the saddle(here, or otherwise) by Febuary, but, I may be mistaken…!
Israel has a worse gun culture than U.S. Every male in Izzie trained with highly lethal guns. Don’t know whether they’re kept in house or in armories. But Izzies think Palestinians are subhumans and have games (not video) targeting Gazan children. “Foreign” policy usually comes home. Is the case in the U.S. but doesn’t seem to be so in Israel.
Is a puzzlement.
Interesting video clip… Richard Engel and crew held captive by pro-Assad militia in Ma’arrat Misrin, Syria…
…Video shows the NBC crew before their release. In the clip the six-man crew — a German, two Britons, two Americans and a Turk — plead with their respective governments to help secure their freedom. Speaking to a script prepared by his captors, NBC’s Richard Engel said:
“My name is Richard Engel, I’m a correspondent with NBC News. I would like to urged the United States government to do what it can to secure our release and to cease its activities in Syria.”
The graffiti on the right wall has a Shia slogan. It says “There is no chivalrous man except ‘Ali [a figure revered in Shiaism], and there is no sword except Dhu l-Fiqar ['Ali's mythical sword].”
Graffiti on the left wall is a well-known pro-Assad slogan, and reads: “Assad, or we burn the whole country!”
Understood, maa8722. Australia’s model worked great for Australia, and no doubt there’s much to be learned from it and applied in the US, but whatever’s developed and applied here will have to be for the US. Raise your hand if you think agreement can be reached here on a model. (Apologies for my cynicism; it’ll wane over the next few days–I hope.)
Here’s a brief article about the former Australian Prime Minister assuring everyone that Obama could solve the problem. After all, Australia did, even winning over the conservative opposition. Problem is, our “conservative opposition” includes some waaaaay out people.
http://www.salon.com/2012/12/19/ex_pm_of_australia_says_obama_can_control_guns/
Harper was a disaster on civil liberties.
Taking everyone’s semi-automatic guns away would never pass Constitutional muster in the U.S. I’m not a big gun fan personally but I would never support such a blatant end-run around Constitutional protections.
In case anyone’s still stressing about Obama’s impending Social Security benefit cut, fret no more because what you think doesn’t matter:
Politico writes, “It’s doubtful the indignation will have much effect in the fast-moving negotiations”
http://www.politico.com/story/2012/12/many-dems-not-sold-on-chained-cpi-offer-85287.html#ixzz2FTgOQNyB
P.S. Greg Sargent writes that Harry Reid, who is currently the only man standing between us and this ill-considered Social Security benefit cut, is “not prepared to accept the emerging deal–yet.”
For totally selfish reasons I wish David Dayen would continue blogging. He will be missed.
Heh, in our country localities “pay” Walmart. It’s interesting that they are willing to pay to have access to consumers.
Apparently the US has the whole paradigm wrong. Instead of taxes we should call what they have to pay “bribe money.”

Death toll from Super Typhoon Bopha rises above 1,000
In the Philippines, officials are still tallying the dead from deadly Super Typhoon Bopha, locally known as Pablo, which made landfall three times as it passed through northern Mindanao, central Visayas, and Palawan on December 4. The typhoon is now being blamed for at least 1020 deaths, making it the deadliest storm on the planet during 2012. At least 844 people are still missing and presumed dead. Bopha affected over 5.4 million people and left over 700,000 people homeless.

So Wal-Mart gets caught bribing Mexican officials. I guess the way for them to get away from the charges, is to bribe American officials.
Err, um, I mean exercise their free speech by donating to the campaigns of American officials.
A bizarre day for a bankster. . .

Is this the so called “grand bargain” they’ve been talking about for months? A premonition from awhile back, then engineers “framing” it.
A grand bargain is like an enema, i.e., negotiating results with one’s intestines.
DDay is leaving. Ouch. Didn’t know. But frankly, I’m amazed that he could do as much as he did… a true activist, in the finest sense of the word.
And David… my handle for most social media networks is Timwhite98. If at some point in the future, you want to reengage the world via the toobz… feel free to connect. Even when I disagree, I respect your POV and really admire your relentless effort. And I fully appreciate your decision to step away. I’m guessing you may be a bit drained.
Thank you for all you’ve done.
~ Tim White, Cheshire, CT
p.s. I’ll repost if I see your goodbye post cuz I really want to make sure you see all the many thanks that you deserve!
D-Day’s writing is the reason I come here. True journalism and superb research. Without David, this is just another blog.
How many times does Ed Case have to lose before he becomes damaged goods?

I’m also playing around with the following thought experiment as per:
That sounded hokey and ambiguous on Seder’s promo – no thanks to your link, fatster! Something about no new taxes on anyone? Crikey.
I very much hope so. Couldn’t wait out Sam Seder, sorry. Wherever David goes, I do hope we get word of it here. And thank you, David, for all you have done for us.
It’s on him, fatster. That’s what we have a president for.
It’s on him.
Make him do it.
Shout them down.
Business doesn’t run like the business: it runs like top down/hands off corporatism supporting shareholders who do none of the business work.
Yet even running government that way supposedly means the stockholders benefit. Aren’t the American citizen’s the stockholders. The middleclass and those below are the majority of American citizens. That should mean that social services-which only the middleclass and those below need should be getting the majority of the benefits. Governments funding should go to their direct benefit, SS, Medicare, national healthcare, housing subsidies, etc.
You want mass shootings to continue? There have been no mass shootings in Australia since they passed their sensible laws to prevent them.
This is not about your rights. Australia still has guns in the hands of private citizens. They still sponsor and win competitive marksmanship competitions. They are the southern hemisphere’s most macho individualistic country, and if they could do it, we can do it.
But I guess we are wimpier than the Aussies.
Oh, that’s wonderful, maa8722! Great to start the day with a very good chuckle. Many thnx.
