House Republicans will wait until tonight to pass “Plan B,” and while I think ultimately it will pass, the reason they’re waiting so long is that they have to figure out what to put into it to get conservative votes. Erick Son of Erick has a whip list of 34 no votes and 12 leaners, and Republicans can only lose 23, assuming no Democratic crossovers. So leadership must sweeten the pot if they want to win the vote.
And the way you sweeten the pot for House Republicans is that you kick the poor a bit more while handing out some aid to Wall Street and Lockheed Martin. Here’s the template bill in question. Basically the sequester, the automatic cuts to defense and discretionary spending, would get replaced by new cuts:
Cuts to food stamps that could knock millions of low-income Americans out of the program;
Cuts to Meals on Wheels, a program that delivers meals to seniors or other individuals who are unable to prepare their own food;
Cuts funding to health exchanges that will be created under Obamacare and funding for Medicaid included in the same law;
Cuts to the Dodd-Frank financial reform law that will yield no cost savings, but will make bailouts of big banks more likely;
Denying the Child Tax Credit to the parents of American children, if the parents are undocumented immigrants.
(Editorial comment: Dodd-Frank won’t make bailouts less likely, but cuts to the resolution authority section of the law are unwise.)
So in essence, Republicans unhappy about passing a bill that cuts taxes on the rich and raises them on the poor will be placated by cutting spending for the poor and easing up on Wall Street and defense contractors. This has become a conservative wish list, basically.
And yet, because of the weird salience of tax rates throughout the debate, the leadership will still have trouble wrangling up the votes.

If 90% of congress contracted ebola disease and died;who would miss them outside of their families? You can not remain a great country for long without competant leaders. the red china communists must be laughing their asses off
The items added to the Republican Plan B as parts of the “Conservative Wish List” are to get more votes, just the way that Obama added CPI adjustments to his fiscal cliff plan.
When will the writes @ FDL get that is the way that these negotiations work?
I mean, I get that you are advocating for a liberal & libertarian viewpoint (social spending + no wars + legal drugs, etc.).
But don’t you think that you just make yourself look a tad foolish when you pretend not to know that one side needs to give the other side something in order to “compromise” to make a deal ??
All these cuts will be approved. Gotta save the defense industry and banks, after all.
Monkeybreath: China ain’t exactly communist any more.
Idiocracy in action
It would depend on which 90%. I’d miss … uh … well, I’d definitely miss Bernie. And if it happened after the new session started, I’d miss Elizabeth and Tammy.
So the Republicans are making changes to the Republican “plan” in order to get more Republican votes, and Obama wanted to add the CPI change to his plan in order to get more Republican (and ConservaDem) votes.
Yup, that’s “compromise” these days.
Did Boehner name it Plan B after the controversial contraceptive so we would at least not worry about getting pregnant after being screwed.
Wait till the Thugs bring out the heavy weapons in those lobbying groups and we will be lining up to sign on.
Are there no workhouses?
That’s in the small print.
I shutter to imagine where this country would be if your type of compromise was how FDR and JFK and Lincoln operated during their terms.
What exactly is the GOP giving up? Tax increase on the richest of the rich? Theyu are already going to expire. They aren’t giving up anything. This is how Obama works. He negotiates against himself in order to push through his Neo Liberal agenda and hope that when he is out of office he still has a seat at the table. It’s shameless and disgusting.
Family Research Council and FreedomWorks have both come out against Plan B, encouraging the House members to vote against it.
Two Conservative groups saying ‘no’ to Boehner and his half-baked idea. Not insignificant.
Same wish list that “democrats” and “PSEUDOPROGRESSIVES” in congress and senate WANT,same list Obama wants.
I am disappointed you mentioned Lockheed, as it is a pretty good supporter of its LGBT employees. Support for Trans in the south is pretty slim and anybody that will give an out Trans person a job in Georgia is appreciated.
I called all my Texas repugs of congress, told the to vote no on this piece of shit….
And P.S. Lockheed is not a favorite of the Congress members of Georgia. They pay lip service to LM but then support shutting done LM with their votes, as the recent loss of 560 salaried jobs will attest.
Agreed. What a mess ol’ pumpkin head has on his hands. Rebellion in the ranks, upheaval among the rank and file, perhaps, even, a mutiny.
I love it when bad things happen to bad people.
