In a rather obvious misdirection maneuver NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre responded to the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut by proposing a new nationwide program for armed guards at all schools. Details on how to pay for the program were not disclosed though the term volunteers was used.
But what was presumably considered a slam dunk inside the NRA brain trust is not going over well on either side of the aisle. Even Republicans seem skeptical of LaPierre’s proposal, from The Hill:
Retiring Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) wouldn’t get behind a federal push to put police in schools.
“I certainly think that at the local level, they should make this decision, because that is going to be accepted in some places and not accepted in some places,” she said Sunday on CBS…
GOP Rep. Tim Scott (S.C.), who will replace Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) in the upper chamber in January, also expressed caution over Congress’s next steps, calling both the NRA and Democratic responses “premature.”
Lapierre also referenced Israel as a model for his proposal in his Meet The Press interview. Unfortunately for Wayne and the NRA, Israel sees it differently:
Yigal Palmor, spokesman for the Israeli Foreign Ministry, said the situation in Israel was “fundamentally different” from that in the United States.
“We didn’t have a series of school shootings, and they had nothing to do with the issue at hand in the United States. We had to deal with terrorism,” said Palmor.
“What removed the danger was not the armed guards but an overall anti-terror policy and anti-terror operations which brought street terrorism down to nearly zero over a number of years,” he said. “It would be better not to drag Israel into what is an internal American discussion,” he added.
This proposal is running out of gas fast. Hopefully the NRA will have better luck with a Plan B than Speaker Boehner.

DW, thanks.

Why does Wayne hate children on school busses? Shouldn’t we have a police officer on EVERY school bus?
/sarcasm.
Well, looking on the bright side,
George Zimmerman would have a job waiting for him when he gets out of prison.
Community volunteer armed with live ammo , huh ?
Like one George Zimmerman, what could go wrong ?
So, according to Yigal Palmor, Israel has a problem with “terrorism”, where we Americans have a “series of school shootings”. Muslim shooter = terrorism, caucasian shooter = ?. Glad you clarified that for us, Yigal.
Maybe if Scalia et ill had to come to these towns and meet these parents we wouldn’t be in this dystopian wet dream of Wayne LaPierre. Never another Newtown!
I think an argument can be made for the other part of the 2nd Amendment- retuning the national guard to the states, and posting some guards in similar public places for few weeks to discourage copy cats.
When the media gives so much attention to a killing like this they encourage them – There was at least 6 days straight coverage which turned Newtown into a fishbowl. Isn’t that what Jane’s movie “Natural Born Killers” was about? (Also, CNN’s anchors were complaining about how hard this was for them yesterday)
oh.. the NRA President’s son went to jail in 2002 for shooting at another driver during an incident of road rage.

Also..- The NRA forgot to mention their own video game at the Friday press conference. pic.twitter.com/5U9Y3uPz

Not that I think video games should be blamed – we all know the difference between fantasy games and killing real people, which we are doing- for real, in the global war on terrah.
I think you’re doing it again……you’re looking at the 30 round magazine as half empty, not half full. :-)
I agree (as I usually do) that the excessive media coverage probably does not help. I just don’t know what to do about it. :-(
Was pretty amazed to see LaPierre on MTP. Even stopped clipping my toenails to watch him. Gregory didn’t pull any punches and LaPierre didn;t answer any questions. But it was fun to watch.
Lol. I always pictured you as a Guinness Book oF World Records type curly fingernailed kinda guy. :). Must have been quite the spectacle to interrupt a nail clipping session.
I see the last week as a successful one for the NRA. They’ve (I believe consciously) made themselves the lightning rod, diverting public attention from the issue of guns to the non-issue of how loony and awful the NRA is. It’s not a perfect solution for them, but it helps insulate their masters in the gun industry.
Let’s just say Wayne did not dissappoint me or Gregory. Bet his misses Charleton Heston. But then, who dosen’t.
