The fight over Chuck Hagel’s appointment as Secretary Of Defense has ventured into truly unfortunate terrain with assertions of prejudice and bigotry by Hagel’s opponents.
In an NPR interview Tuesday Elliott Abrams claimed that former Senator and current Defense Secretary nominee Chuck Hagel was antisemitic:
ABRAMS: I think he has a chance at his confirmation hearing to show that he is not what he appears to be, which is frankly an anti-Semite. It’s not just being anti-Israel. He’s got a problem with what he calls the Jews, the Jewish lobby. I think if he cannot satisfy people that he is not, in fact, bigoted against Jews, he certainly should not be confirmed.
In response the Council On Foreign Relations, where Abrams is a Senior Fellow, stated Abrams comments did not represent the institution:
The Council on Foreign Relations told Al Monitor Tuesday that controversial accusations made by its senior fellow Elliott Abrams in an interview Monday did not represent the views of the institution.
Abrams, the former Bush White House Middle East advisor, called Hagel an anti Semite in an interview with NPR’s All Things Considered. The accusation was widely lambasted on social media sites after the interview aired. Asked by Al-Monitor what evidence he has to support his accusation, Abrams did not respond.
Abrams’ wife Rachel Abrams is a founding board member of the Emergency Committee for Israel, a Bill Kristol–led, GOP group at the center of the anti-Hagel campaign. ECI previously ran TV ads against President Obama’s 2012 reelection.
“As you may know, the Council on Foreign Relations takes no institutional position on matters of policy,” CFR’s vice president for global communications and media relations Lisa Shields told Al-Monitor by email Tuesday. “The views expressed by our more than seventy experts, who reflect a broad range of backgrounds and perspectives, are theirs only.”
Whether the anti-Semite charge sticks is unknown though it seems clear if Chuck Hagel continues on to a confirmation hearing he will have to address concerns about comments he has made concerning Jews and the state of Israel.
In the event Chuck Hagel passes confirmation and substantively demonstrates he does not harbor antisemitic views Elliott Abrams will likely face calls to retract his charge or face further distancing. If Abrams has knowingly made a false charge then he has done everyone a disservice.

So Elliott Abrams is now dissing Hagel?
Dang, Hagel’s looking better for SecDef by the minute.
A brief reminder of the acts of known war criminal and Iran-Contra figure Elliott Abrams: http://upsidedownworld.org/main/international-archives-60/3440-elliot-abrams-dark-history-in-latin-america-and-the-struggle-for-justice
Last night Rachel Maddow bashed Hagel over his views on abortion, rape, and homosexuality.
Hagel could do our nation a valuable service by coming clean on the issue of electronic election fraud, until he does so, he’s not fit to hold any public office.
I wouldn’t even mention this if I didn’t believe that by now, he understands fully, the tremendous harm that has resulted from election fraud perpetrated by his party.
A guy can dream, can’t he?
Tbogg has a reference to an Esquire article by Charles Pierce on Hagel. He does appear to be ” on the side” of the foot soldier Hagel was a grunt in Vietnam. There are likely worse candidates.
What’s the best Yiddish term for Mr. Elliott Abrams? I think he’s best described as a “schnorrer”. cb
“Asshole” isn’t Yiddish, but it is accurate….
I definitely have mixed emotions about Hegal for Sec of Def. There’s a lot of skeletons in his closet, which I take more seriously than some others do. And just bc some asshole like Abrams commences to dissing Hegal doesn’t make me “want” Hegal anymore.
That said, Abrams is a jerk. And it’s tiresome, to put it politely, to bring out the long knives to label Hegal as anti-semitic based on one remark about the “Jewish Lobby.” Spare me the hand-wringing & pearl clutching.
Zionist Isreal has too much sway over Team USA’s foreign policy and imperialism. Anyone with half a brain knows that. All Abrams is doing is blowing smoke with his strawman “argument” to diss Hegal and make him look bad. Per usual, Abrams has pushed Hegal into the position of allegedly having to “prove” that he’s not anti-semitic. Classic chess move, but a load of Kabuki Show bullshit.
Thanks for the update. I’m still not waving my pom-poms for Hegal, however.
Given that Abrams is a convicted liar, why would CFR hire him, and why is NPR interviewing him? What do these assholes have to do in order to lose credibility with allegedly respectable people?
we are seeing PNACs clay free dissolve. Hopefully the rest of congress will see that they’ll have political cover if they choose not to stand and clap for Fred Flintstone when DWS raises her arms, or if they don’t sign letters (about Russian Antisemitism) to be run in the NYTs. It’s a narcissistic exercise for the lobby.
Abrams and Senor should not just have to apologize, they should be kicked out of their seats.
I hope Hagel will make some policy concessions towards gays and treat rape as a serious crime to get everyone on board. I understand the concerns but I hope they don’t want revenge for thier resentments more than they want to break the power of the “Greater Israel Lobby” and root the liberal interventionist brinkmen out of power.
Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face; This is bigger that all of our single issues.
When is Maddow going to make aliya?
Eh? Good question. Seems that where they might lose credibility is if, you know, they actually tell the truth? Because certainly, we are rarely, if ever, presented with some Very Smart Person who does that anymore. They are – one & all, no matter who they allege to work for or support or whatever – are a calvacade of charlatans, liars, shills, hacks, whores & grifters.
National Pentagon/Propoganda Radio has no more credibility than Fake Noise. I only listen to some of the entertainment programs. I steer clear of any of NPR’s “nooz” shows. Mostly all bullshit and very very very biased to the right.
I didn’t see Maddow’s show, but if it’s as portrayed by another comment up above, it shows how Maddow is toeing the party line of her big bosses.
If Maddow was pulling the skeletons out of Hegal’s closet to diss him, then it’s because the PTB want the so-called “left” to be against him, too.
I have my issues with Hegal and am not all that thrilled with his nomination.
That said, it’s clear as day that Zionist Israel will pull out all stops to call shots on how “our” govt is run and what “our” foreign policy is.
No I don’t like that. Not. At. All.
I figure Maddow did what she was told to do. I doubt she’ll walk it back, but that remains to be seen.
“allegedly respectable people” it’s a tautology.
I saw her spiel last night- what I could stand of it.
Her attacks are as zealous as when she tries to pigeon hole some Teabagger politician. I also caught Chris Matthews and Morning Joe and they were reasonable.
I don’t believe Hagel is great all around, but if he makes a truce with gays and women he’s exactly what we need in that particular position. No one else besides Gates will reduce the size of the military or it’s budget, and even more so than Gates, thinks war should be a last resort.
Can’t tell if there is a joke in there, but it seems to me that in “allegedly respected” the ‘allegedly’ might be pleonastic, but not in “allegedly respetable.” Abrams is not worthy of my respect, although he is widely respected.
Don’t fret Chuck, we’re all anti-Semites these days. Unless you nod your head, shut your mouth, and agree with everything all things ISREAL you are an anti-Semite.
Still don’t like your politics though Chuck. Even though I don’t believe you’re a real anti-Semite.
Why is it that only Republicans can be nominated to Defense?? Why do Democrats agree??? How much evidence do you “no the two parties are NOT working together” need?????
Lotsa good comments and discussion here today.
I tend to want to give the POTUS whoever he wants in HIS cabinet. I like the fact that Hagel is anti-war and not gonna be under the thumb of Israel. But, I’m not sure, yet. I checked with the people “in the know”…..Vegas oddsmakers. Hagel is a 5-3 underdog.
Because they aren’t cruise-missile liberal interventionists*, and like the Roman, the potentially wimpy anti-war babies are killed in political-utero by the abortionists. Republicans give cover to Democrats against those calling them “cheese eating surrender monkeys,” and counter-intuitively, they are seen as having big enough cahones to put on the breaks.
It’s the Mythos.
* does not apply to neocons.
ha! Vegas? It’s a kosher conspiracy. Harry Reid has already counted the votes.
That fucking Mythos, again.
”
SO WHAT, even if he is?
It is about time we should PUT AN END TO this charade of charges of ANTI-SEMITISM, in general. The sufferings of Jews have always been exploited only by other (crazy) Jews for their personal gains. The biggest racism/ bigotry is to accuse someone of anti-Semitism in order to shut them up. The word anti-Semitism should be outlawed and banned because it is equivalent of Jewish WMD and is, often, used by unscrupulous Jews to terrorize honest people into submission. This kind of tactic is disgrace and tarnishes image of Jewish people.
What about Wes Clark?
Abrams belongs in a jail cell in The Hague.
I had thought Abrams had gotten away with complicity in the murder and displacement of hundreds of thousands of Central Americans in the 1980s, but now, decades later, there is the distinct possibility he may “face further distancing” from the Council on Foreign Relations.
So there is justice.
Does anyone in their right mind think this major P.O.S. and his ” brain dead old lady ” have an honest bone in their whole bodies. Both of them are Jewish whores of the First Circle. These 2 were trying to crush OWS from its’ inception. They are well paid traitors to our country. Screw this Israel First slob and his ” mushy- brained ” better half. I’d like to see them both ” swingin ” from a palm tree.
There are likely worse candidates?
In a nation of over 300,000, there are also likely at least few million Democrats who are far superior candidates, too.
Why anyone even has to deal with a Republican with a track record of homophobic and anti-Semitic remarks and try to figure out if he means his conveniently timed disavowals is the real question.
Neither my nose nor my face want Hagel in any Cabinet position.
Regardless of who criticizes him or who praised him, he would still look to me like a Republican homophobic POS.
And?
