When President Obama announced Jack Lew’s nomination for Treasury Secretary he promised Lew would help bring people together, I doubt this is what he meant.
From ABC News:
Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., the ranking member on the Senate Budget Committee, declared today that Jack Lew must “never” become secretary of the Treasury.
“To confirm Mr. Lew would be to acquiesce in a policy of dishonesty to the American people,” Sessions said. ”For me, no mea culpa, no excuse, can erase the errors of Mr. Lew.”…
At issue, Sessions said, is what he called Lew’s “outrageous and false” testimony before the Senate Budget committee nearly two years ago. Sessions said the testimony should disqualify Lew from becoming Treasury secretary.
“To look the American people in the eye and make such a statement remains the most direct and important false assertion during my entire time in Washington,” Sessions said. “We need a secretary of Treasury that the American people, the Congress, and the world will know is up to the task of getting America on the path to prosperity, not the path to decline. Jack Lew is not that man.”
Senator Bernie Sanders also issued a statement on the Lew nomination:
“As a supporter of the president, I remain extremely concerned that virtually all of his key economic advisers have come from Wall Street. In my view, we need a treasury secretary who is prepared to stand up to corporate America and their powerful lobbyists and fight for policies that protect the working families in our country. I do not believe Mr. Lew is that person.”
And a blast from the past courtesy of Salon – Lew worked aggressively to bust a union:
Lew, the former director of the Office of Management and Budget under President Clinton, joined NYU as chief operating officer and executive vice president in 2004. At the time, NYU was the only private university in the United States whose graduate students had a union contract. By the time Lew left two years later, NYU graduate students had lost their collective bargaining rights. In between, picketers hoisted “Wanted” posters with his face on them.
It’s unlikely labor will hold a grudge and mobilize against the Lew nomination but it seems at least a few Senators will.

So, how about Sheila Bair? BTW, she claims to be a Republican.
William K Black, he would straighten things right out – and if not him then Randall Wray.
That is why neither are in the running wouldn’t want to upset 0 friends on ws;)
I am looking into my Magic 8 Ball, and it is saying:
Only a Wall St CROOK will get this job. BANK on it.
Really. Feel free to quote my Magic 8 Ball all day long…
symbolic dissent only-typically ineffectual dems when it comes to protecting the middle.
Should he be sent to prison or be made Secretary of Treasury?
This is the one area – business as usual on the economy – that would unite conservative, center and liberal voters. Everyone, or at least 99% of us are furious with Wall Street and transnationals.
Obama and Quisling Democrats had, and have no desire to take advantage of this dynamic. The Tea Party had popular momentum initially, but when it became apparent they were the tool of the Republican branch of Wall Street water-carriers, they fizzled.
Whoever takes advantage of this unrest (and it could be FDR or Hitler, but given the seeds of fascism have bloomed, I’m guessing the later this go-around)will rule.
I’m sure Lew will be great! What could be better for business than a figure who goes after not the fat-cats of academe, who stuff themselves with salaries and perks, but the mongrel horde of starving graduate students, whose teaching and work is the cutting edge of academic value?
How about Warren Mosler or Beowulf?
Tweety Bird had a segment on Lew that pointed out his signature, which would appear on all the new currency, is like a sick joke. It consists of a group of loops, which bear no resemblance to letters in any language. His signature screams ” I don’t give a shit”.
If Bernie Sanders can say he is a supporter of the President he should come out of the closet and just join the Democratic party. A real independent progressive could not support this President.
“It’s unlikely labor will hold a grudge and mobilize against the Lew nomination but it seems at least a few Senators will.”
As Yeats said, “The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.”
I completely agree.
Hey, Bernie: maybe if
then you should be more than
just maybe, you shouldn’t be
You know, in case you’re wondering why I stopped listening your fake, good-cop, faux-populist rhetoric, things like this are it.
Sanders is just like the rest.
They’ll tally up the votes and if Sanders isn’t needed, he gets to vote no.
But if his vote counts, he’ll fall in line with a yes.
And keep cashing his checks.
Of course.
Here’s what William Black has to say about Lew and the rest of the failures Obama has appointed.

He supports the President except for his policies related to…
NDAA, War Crimes Prosecution,XL pipeline, Drill baby drill,
SS & Medicare Cuts, Banking fraud, foreclosure reform, etc.
Other than pardoning the thanksgiving turkey precisely what does Bernie support about this President?
What have the Romans ever done for us? (Sorry, not really related-you just made me think of it!)
I’m wondering how?
Thanks
“Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., the ranking member on the Senate Budget Committee, declared today that Jack Lew must “never” become secretary of the Treasury.”
Ha, maybe the one and only time I will ever agree with Sessions.
It’s that scene from Monty Python’s Life of Brian where the People’s Front of Judea are having a secret meeting. Someone asks the rhetorical question “what have the Romans ever done for us?” He gets several responses which ultimately end up listed: ‘sanitation, roads, trade, aqueducts, etc., etc. but OTHER THAN THAT, what have the Romans ever done for us?’ I’m picturing ol’ Bernie going through the same thing: other than all those neoliberal policies (which he actually supports), what has Obama ever done for me? Maybe, like the People’s Front, Bernie just needs to spend more time ginning up his outrage?
I warned you: it’s not really related and only makes complete sense in my mind…
LMAO,is this really a suprise from Obummer? LMAO at all progressives that voted for Obummer. Of course, a true progressive would not be supporting Dems anyway. Glad I voted for Stien.
