A suicide bomber in Turkey attacked the American embassy in Ankara, Turkey. The attack killed both the bomber and a Turkish security guard. Other injuries were reported. While no one has claimed responsibility the Turkish government believes the attack was likely the work of a domestic militant group.
[Turkish Interior Minister] Guler said “preliminary information” obtained by police indicated that the bomber was likely connected to a domestic left-wing militant group. He did not elaborate.
A police official, meanwhile, told The Associated Press that the bomber is most likely a suspected member of the outlawed Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party-Front, or DHKP-C. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not permitted to speak to the press.
The group has been designated a terrorist organization by the United States but had been relatively quiet in recent year.
The DHKP-C opposes American influence in Turkey and has reportedly engaged in suicide bombings before.
While the US embassy has issued a travel warning for Turkey it is unclear if the DHKP-C or whatever group was responsible has decided to launch a larger campaign against American interests in Turkey.

Interesting that it was the embassy in Ankara that was attacked and not the consulate in Istanbul. It feels like the attack was directed at American government, not regular Americans who would be more likely to be in Istanbul or Efesis. I wonder if Sybil Edmonds has any thoughts about this…
wiki on the Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party/Front (DHKP/C):
Ironically Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced in a TV interview last week that Turkey might seek membership in the Russian and Chinese-led Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), given the stalled negotiations with the European Union that Turkey has struggled for 40 years to join. China welcomed the Turkish bid.

Welcome to State, Secretary Kerry. How is your first day going?

Too soon?
Yeah, this attack has some cold war elements in it. Turkey has quite the history with Soviet influence and from what I’ve heard, the 1970′s was a scary time to be a Turk trying to live a normal life. There was apparantly a lot of violence back then. Interesting about the relationship between Turkey and Syria and where Russian and American influence wants to be currently.
Turkey has been a member of NATO since 1952..are you thinking of German influence?..The Ottoman Empire was allied to Germany and Autria Hungary during WW1
