One of Hagel’s leading critics is Breitbart News Editor Ben Shapiro who tweeted that Hagel’s confirmation as Defense Secretary was a victory for “Islamists, anti-Semites, isolationists, anti-Israel extremists and people who just wanted a moron as SecDef.” Shapiro had written a story for Breitbart News that claimed that, according to sources from the Senate, Hagel had received support from a group known as “Friends of Hamas” which became a subject of controversy.
Despite opposition from the conservative press and Republican Senators Chuck Hagel will be the next Defense Secretary. Unfortunately for him he was confirmed the same week sequestration is set to kick in at the Defense Department which is sure to be a long, bitter, and at times surreal process. Out of the frying pan and into the fire.

About FDL News Desk
I feel like this article needs a P.S. or something that ‘the critics’ won.
A reasonable, evidence-based, liberal-ish candidate wasn’t even considered.
Charlie Pierce nailed it with this quote:
The whole sorry episode happened because of an unusual confluence of raw bitterness (McCain), nervous petulance (Graham), and outright McCarthyite lunacy (Take a bow, Ted Cruz) that added up to only one conclusion — the Republican party fought the nomination of Chuck Hagel because they thought there was a political advantage to be gained simply by being dickheads.
Touche.
Hey: no love lost on my part to witness Chuck the Hegal get this post. Like: WTF??? There was absolutely no putative “Democrat” that coulda done this? Seriously?
Watching the idiocracy, like Virgin Ben, throw shit-fits was just catnip for the heavily propogandized masses. Part of the Kabuki Show, frankly.
My take on Walnuts McCrankyPants petulant ravings??? He’s still a sore loser bc he lost to “that one,” and he’s a media whore, who’ll take any chance he can get to get in the spotlight. That, and he was probably paid off by Poppy Booosh bc the Chuckstir said mean things about W.
The whole “anti-semite” bullshit is just hype. Like shooting fish in a barrel. Everyone’s said something somewhere sometime that sounds bad and can be twisted into something ridiculous.
BAH HUMBUG.
My loathing for every last one of ‘em knows no bounds.
Plus by having the “Republicans” and jerk-wadz like Virgin Ben throwing shit-fits, I duly noted that it got a whole lotta “Democrats” to buy-in on having REPUBLICAN Hegal get this post. Why if Breitfartians say Hegal is bad, then it MUST MEAN that I should be for Hegal getting this post.
The Kabuki Show really worked like the magical thinking it is.
BAH HUMBUG.
My loathing for every last one of ‘em knows no bounds.
My take on Walnuts McCrankyPants petulant ravings??? He’s still a sore loser bc he lost to “that one,”
You nailed it. I’m 61 years old, and I’ve never seen a defeated presidential candidate with such a chip on his shoulder.
It’s getting to the point where it’s almost embarressing to watch him carry on. Pathetic. Has really passed his Sell-By Date.
:)
Thought you’d like that.
Isn’t it amazing how popular Walnuts was when he exhibited the same behavior toward Dubya after he pasted him in ’99? That made him popular and a “Maverick”. Of course he then dropped to his knees, puckered up and planted a wet one on both of Dubya’s cheeks to secure the 2008 nomination. Amazingly he’s still treated with deference and credibility today. You have to wonder if he ever thinks he should have just melted away when he got the biggest break in his political life by being exposed as corrupt and escaping consequence in the Keating 5 days.
Respectfully, I don’t think it’s even remotely necessary that we give the Ben Shapiros of this world the time of day.
I agree, but… a LOT of citizens pay attention to the Ben Shapiros, so there is some validity in observing what the 1% have paid shills like Ben to hack out. Just saying…
The kiss was more towards the “manly region” emphasized by Bush’s flight suit, as I recall.
Obama has the democrats supporting a homophobic republican for Secretary of Defense and they think the republicans are stupid? Obama couldn’t find a qualified non homophobic democrat for the job?
Nah, Walnuts NEVER thinks that. It’s clear that Walnuts LOVES the spotlight and the attention and all the sweet sweet payola. Hey, he got away with it. A huge fast one. Why should a sociopath like Walnuts ever feel the slightest twinge over ripping off the 99%. Walnuts was heartily congratulated for it and equally heartily rewarded for it.
And I think that goes to why he is so very very ANGRY that he “lost” to “that one.” Like KKKarl Rove this past November, I think McCrankyPants believed he had that ‘lection “in the bag,” even with that idiot that was foisted on him as a “running mate.”
McCrankyPants simply cannot get OVER the fact that the PTB let him LOSE, and LOST BIG TIME, and to a _______, no less.
Yeah. Wrap your head around that one.
If I had nickle for every time I read or heard a “Democratic” voter rushing to defend Hagel bc he was being meanly dissed by “Republicans,” I could be rich beyond belief.
Believe me, it’s not just Tea Partiers who are tribalistic authoritarians heavily propogandized by the bullshit shoveled out endlessly by the fabulously wealthy 1%, who laugh all the way to their off-shore accounts.
Hagel: CHA CHING!!!!!!!
One more question to ponder: what kind of person relies on the likes of Ben Shapiro for their “news”?
You know we both agree most of the time. But here, I think the republicans are dickheads even when there is no good reason to BE one.
McCain is just a bitter old fart. Graham, he just like to ratle his sabre. MY senator, Ted Cruz, he’s just a friggin lunatic. It’s really that simple.
This was a friggin’ train wreck. It showed exactly howe government is NOT suppose to work. Insidious personal agendas and vendettas. Sure, Hagel looked ill prepared and unqualified for the job. But, some people just don’t interview well.
IN the end, it was ALL FOR NOTHING! Which is what me get most of the time out of our current government.
yes agree it was horrid & ridiculous. I loath these beings with the loathing of a milliozillion white hot suns. I cannot believe that I have PAY for these useless rip-off shitheads, and their platinum-plated health care for them and their equally useless spouses for life.
PTOUI!!!!!!!
I have to admit one thing…I take pleasure in seeing how angry and bitter McCain is. And I don’t feel guilty about it one bit.
Agree 100%
I see your PTOUI and raise a one fingered salute to the whole despicable, useless bunch.
I’m glad I didn’t waste any of my time with this much ado about nothing confirmation crisis about a Republican nominated by a Democrat and opposed by Republicans.
How many tours did Little Bennie serve in Iraq/Afgahnistan?
He does have military service, doesn’t he?
This sentence by DSWright above:
That is an amazingly MSM-ish sentence, in the worst possible way.
I read the N.Y. Times every day because I understand that it still plays an invaluable role in news gathering, and if I read that sentence in the Times I wouldn’t complain, because I know they feel the need to be “objective” between the Beltway cliques, oops, I mean political parties. So I take the bad with the good.
But I don’t see why the FDL news desk feels the need to play that game.
P.S. Even in the Times, that sentence would have been followed by one explaining the “Friends of Hamas” story ended up being baseless.
How much do you want to bet that Shapiro plagerized his tweet?
Look up dickheads in the dictionary an lo and behold ….a friggin lunatic, saber rattling bitter old fart.
Hagel confirmed, wonder what set of poor brown peoples
will suffer the celebratory bombing of Hagel’s confirmation, those in Yemen,Somalia,Mali,Pakistan or where ?
Forty-one Republicans will now have their hands out to the Israel lobby. They didn’t oppose Hagel enough to filibuster him, but they wanted to put on a good show.
I’m hoping the reason why Obama chose Hagel is that he wants to cut military spending–something Hagel has advocated–and selecting a Republican gives him political cover from the ridiculous Republican criticism that Democrats are weak on national security.
I am most emphatically not a Dem, but… though this might “give him cover” in the short term, it actually perpetuates the “Dems are soft on defense” meme when their president won’t even consider one for the job.
