About FDL News Desk
Elizabeth Warren shreds three Treasury, Comptroller of the Currency and Fed officials
concerning the slap on the wrist that HSBC got over repeated money laundering for drug traffickers.
All three were Obama appointees, including a Republican O named to the Fed.
But, a nearby Blogg will surely have a perfectly sensible
rationalizationexplanation, involving Jill Stein, sparkle ponies and Moar Dronz, so all is well.
Isn’t that a great video, though? Thanks ever so much, allan.
Good evening, fatster (and allan); I have the distinct impression that the amount of news is increasing with time, and I don’t know how you keep up with it.
It is tempting to cheer Berlusconi’s jail sentence, but it may be an empty gesture: The TPM article you link to points out that it is rare in Italy for anyone to actually go to jail pending possible appeal. Indeed, according to al-Jazeera’s report, in Italy people over 75 (which he is) with sentences under two years do not actually have to go to prison.
My second post on the University of Virginia situation, written on Tuesday morning, is now old enough to have dropped off the list of recent diaries that appears on the right in myFDL diaries. However, I’d like people to know that I’ve been using its comments thread to add news of further developments, such as Rector Helen Dragas’s Tuesday protest of the Faculty Senate’s resolution Monday criticizing her reported conduct. I plan to keep this up at least through tomorrow, which is the last day of the originally announced campaign by the campus coordinating group UVA United For Honor.
And a good Good Evening to you, too, E. F. Beall.
I’m sure Berlusconi will never see the inside of a jail cell–or if so, for a short period anyway, and probably from a well-appointed jail cell. DDay enjoyed Berlusconi stories, so I’m just in the habit of picking them up.
Thanks for letting us know about your additions to the UVA post from Tuesday. I’ll mosey on over and check it out.
Investors Seek Ways to Profit From Global Warming
No comment. And, good evening, f. and E.F.
Dow 36,000 Is Attainable Again. By James K. Glassman. That James K. Glassman.
No, really.
I’ll comment, allan. To cite the wisdom of wayoutwest, originally offered in connection with the Obamacare Medicaid expansion, it’s another case of capitalism profiting from the failure of capitalism. They’ve wrecked the planet but they might as well make a buck or two from the wreckage.
What a mess at UVA! Academic politics can be some of the worst, too. My first year in graduate school was the year all the professors in our particular academic department decided to go to war with each other. The students had to be very careful not to be seen with any one professor outside of class, less another get jealous and then get mad at the student. Finally, the Dean of the Graduate School came down hard on the professors and some basic decorum was restored.
Too bad they so easily forget what the purpose of the university is–which is not to serve their ego-needs.
Hi folks
Stompin Tom Connors died last night, Canadians are sad, He wrote and sang about ordinary Canadians

Those people inhabit an alternate universe, don’t they? I mean, just look at this!
What a colorful character he was, mafr! From beginnings that might have overwhelmed most folks, he went on to make a success of himself and yet always stayed true to his principles and the hard-working people of Canada. I loved the story about his stompin’ boards, too–and he even used them to help out the less fortunate. Thanks so much for letting us know about him. I wish he hadn’t left us so early, but he did leave us enriched.
Here’s the wiki link, btw.
It was, I believe, H. L. Mencken who said that academic politics were vicious because the stakes were so small.
However, the stakes may have gone up, with Big Capital of various stripes making inroads..
True, and true, E. F. Beall. Sigh.
thanks, Fatster.
Thank you, mafr.
Love the Dude link :)
❖ “Jordan is close to commissioning two nuclear power reactors” with United Arab Emirates “seed funding”. UAE wants “to build four nuclear reactors” of its own.
I wonder what the solar potential of Jordan and the UAR is.
What stupidity.
I guess this makes the screwed employees even more angry
…delphi, remember
“As Palast reported, a trust in Ann Romney’s name listed “more than $1 million” invested with Elliott Management, run by hedge fund guru and GOP mega-donor Paul Singer. (That’s the minimum amount of disclosure required by law, so it could have been much more than $1 million.)
Singer subsequently snapped up large amounts of stock in Delphi at pennies on the dollar, and then, along with other hedge funds, demanded that the government assume pension responsibilities and bail the company out—or they would shut it down, thus crushing General Motors as well.
The government acceded, Delphi became lucrative again and then went public, and Elliott Management and its investors—including Romney—reaped enormous rewards.”

Of course the gubmint just had to “accede” to the hedge fund demands. No other choice there.
quote of the day (I know it’s early but I am laying odds none will be better) from a comment over at mario piperni this is from member alwaysoccupy
warning, I will paraphrase and use that in the future
Thanks for the two links about North Korea.
There’s another, though, depicting satellite images including gulags being expanded there. . .all the rage since Google maps released a lot of such NK data a few weeks ago. Of course our Administration(s) would have been fully aware from the gitgo. It’s good there is more, readily and widely accessible now. Scroll way, way down.
So much for deniers.

Thanks for that. I thought that there was a connection with Delphi & the RMoney’s. Lady Muck got HERS, Eff “those people.” That’s truly how these parasites feel.
Of course, the
mob“government” let the Hedge Fund STEAL all the ca$h. Who gives a shite about the worthless moochers who always have their hand out expecting something for nothing?? Or, oops, is that projection, perhaps, on the part of the RMoney’s of this planet???Malaysia invaded by western, Saudi sponsored terrorists in attempt to install puppet regime.
Carl Levin seemed to have lost his mojo the past few years. He teamed up with Senator McCain to write the odious NDAA provisions on detention, and was one of the elder statesmen who fought filibuster reform.
That said, there is absolutely no one with a chance of getting elected who is more progressive than him. Yet another example of the Democratic Party being an obstacle to progress.
The most likely Democratic nominee is Gary Peters*, who is much too Blue Doggy on economic issues (he made it clear that he wouldn’t vote to repeal the Bush tax cut for those making > $250K).
Now that the Senate seat is open, I expect a Spindletop Dome of SuperPAC money to gush all over the state. Hurray for lie-filled 30-second attack ads!
* Not to be confused with the journeyman White Sox pitcher who, for reasons unknown, Reggie Jackson couldn’t hit.
Me too, AshenLight. :) backatcha.
and onitgoes @ 21.
Great find, mafr! Elliott is the outfit involved in a bitter fight with Argentina. Remember the good ship Libertad and Ghana? Now the action is centered in the Second Circuit (New York) where Argentina and Elliott are engaged in a huge struggle with major implications for Argentina and the New York banksters, as well as Elliott. We should know by the end of the month how this thing will shake out.
Thanks so much for the link, and . . . Good Morning!
I know it’s flyover country and all, but the fracking ban was passed by the Fort Collins, COLORADO city council.
Aw, red-faced and all, am I. Thnx so much pokums. I’ll correct it now.
Lot of
shitwater under the bridge to corruptionville, but we can all remember some of it.No prob, as much stuff as you throw our way every day, you’re bound to have a glitch now and then. Looks like Guv Hick and the state AG will sue Fort Collins on behalf of the energy corps… state vs. local control issues, seems kinda analogous to the fed vs. state control issues over MJ legalization.
I just gulped when I saw that it’s not only the CO oil and gas industry–but the state too? #($*#&#)%^!!
Thanks so much, pokums. And never hesitate to point out typos and so forth. 100% accuracy is the goal and I appreciate everybody’s help in trying to get there.
:)
