Barrett Brown’s epic rant that lead to his incarceration was brought on by the FBI targeting his family, specifically his mother. Now it seems government has vindictively delivered on its barbarous threat to attack families.
Barrett Brown’s current stint in federal prison can be linked, in a way, to his mother. It was the FBI’s treatment of her that prompted the YouTube rant and Twitter tirade in which Brown threatened a special agent and his family, which in turn led to the heavily armed raid on Brown’s apartment and his arrest and indictment last year.
Brown had been targeted by the feds for a while over Anonymous’ hack of security firm Stratfor (e.g. sharing a link), but the initial arrest and indictment are directly traceable to his mom who, we learn today, could soon join her son in federal lockup.
Brown’s mother, Karen McCutchin, pleaded guilty last week to
a charge of obstructing the execution of a search warrant… Under the deal she struck with the feds, she faces a maximum sentence of 12 months in prison and a $100,000 fine. Sentencing has not yet been scheduled.
Brown is a notoriously unsympathetic figure personally. Jerk would be putting it mildly. But that is neither here nor there, the crime he is being charged with is beyond ridiculous. In some ways of all those being charged with violations of the CFAA – from Aaron Swartz to Jeremy Hammond to Weev – Brown is the one facing the most absurd charges.
Yes, that is his crime. He posted a link in a chat room to a website he did not create or manage that contained information he did not collect or publish. That website contained information illegally obtained. That is his crime. Ponder whether you have ever committed that “crime.” I bet you have.
Say goodbye to your mother.
