Talk about bad optics. CNN is reporting that some staff workers for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid are exempt from Obamacare exchanges. I guess Reid thinks his staff deserves higher quality healthcare? Who trusts a chef that won’t eat his own food?

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, one of Obamacare’s architects and staunchest supporters, is also the only top congressional leader to exempt some of his staff from having to buy insurance through the law’s new exchanges.

So the other major congressional leaders have put their staff into the system but Reid will not, why? Are not the exchanges excellent places to select great healthcare plans?

Reid is the exception among the other top congressional leaders. GOP House Speaker John Boehner, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell have all directed their staffs to join the exchange, their aides said.

Among all the issues with Obamacare this is clearly not the most important. But it is yet another indication of something both Obamacare skeptics and proponents agree on – the Democrats have done a terrible job selling Obamacare.

Much of that can be blamed on Republican distortions and the fact that the substance of the bill is less than impressive. Yet it is hard to imagine public support would have dropped this much if there were not so many self-inflicted wounds like a bungled website or personal carve outs for key congressional staffers.
