Turmoil in Ukraine

- Russia has control of Crimea, U.S. officials say, and John Kerry will be heading out to Kiev to show support for Ukraine

- The Federal Assembly (the parliament) in Russia has given the O.K. to Putin to use Russian troops to protect Russian interests

- Obama and Putin talked on the phone. Obama stressed consequences if Russian troops weren’t removed, while Putin pledged to help Russian civilians in Ukraine threatened by far-right forces supported by the government

- U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon:  We need calm dialogue on the situation developing in the Ukraine

- Meanwhile, the Ukrainian government is begging the U.N. Security Council for an emergency meeting to stop the “aggression” of Russia

- The recently appointed head of the navy in Ukraine pledged to protect Crimea only and a Ukrainian navy flagship defected to the Russian army

- Secretary of State John Kerry: The West is prepared to implement sanctions against Russia 

- Acting Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk states the country is on “the verge of disaster
