Well this is embarrassing. A Republican US Senate Candidate in Alaska, Dan Sullivan, who was endorsed by former National Security Advisor and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, is apparently taking money from a pro-Putin oligarch.
Leonard Blavatnik, a billionaire thanks to Russia’s crash privatization program and his political connections in the Kremlin, has given over $100,000 to various candidates including Republican Hawks such as Dan Sullivan and Tom Cotton – both of whom are running for US Senate this cycle. What Blavatnik wants in return for his support is unclear.
A pro-Putin Russian oligarch, billionaire, and proprietor of Access Industries, has taken a keen interest in the 2014 election cycle, contributing hefty donations to establishment Republicans and Democrats vying for congressional seats in 2014, according to OpenSecrets.org…
Blavatnik contributed $5,200 (the maximum amount allowed by law) to Daniel S. Sullivan, who’s running for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate in Alaska against Lieutenant Governor Mead Treadwell and Joe Miller. Singer’s Friends for an American Majority also supports Rep. Tom Cotton of Arkansas and Rep. Steve Daines in Montana. Blavatnik donated $5,200 to each of them as well.
Condoleezza Rice endorsed Sullivan, but did she know he was taking Putinist money?
American Crossroads, a SuperPAC run by another Bush Administration alumn by the name of Karl Rove, helped put together an ad featuring Rice endorsing Sullivan. Crossroads is spending $180,000 on the ad campaign. Sullivan previously worked for Rice at the State Department.
Then again perhaps the endorsement of a Putinist backed candidate does make sense. Rice famously authored a speech in which the George H. W. Bush Administration recognized Ukraine as belonging to Russia.
You can see the irony from your house.
