450,000 Seniors Would Lose Coverage Under Medicare Eligibility Age Increase

By: Tuesday December 11, 2012 2:21 pm

The ferocious pushback on a trial balloon offer to raise the Medicare eligibility age continued today, at a very high level.

Progressive Groups Oppose Potential Social Security Benefit Cut From Move to Chained CPI

By: Tuesday October 16, 2012 1:01 pm

I mentioned earlier today that Social Security recipients will see a 1.7% cost of living increase in 2013, one of the smallest in the history of the program, which amounts to around $21 a month for the average recipient. This is likely to get eaten up by Medicare premium increases and drug costs. In two [...]

Social Security COLA Increase for 2013: 1.7%

By: Tuesday October 16, 2012 7:53 am

The COLA is calculated by a measurement of inflation, which has risen slowly over the past year. However, the inflation calculation used currently, the Consumer Price Index for Wage Earners or CPI-W, may not take in the rise in cost of living for seniors, which most strongly depends on rising health care costs (a separate measure, the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly or CPI-E, accounts for this much better).

Another Occupy Wall Street Win: Super Committee Quietly Failing

By: Tuesday November 8, 2011 6:57 am

When the President said he would “pivot to jobs” after the debt limit deal, I was skeptical, mainly because there was this Super Committee hanging out there that would be the subject of much consternation, negotiation and debate. That focus would get in the way of the jobs agenda and the attempts to pass the [...]

Super Committee Eyes Social Security

By: Tuesday November 1, 2011 9:35 am

I still don’t think there’s going to be a grand bargain coming out of the Catfood Commission II. Republicans summarily rejected the first offer from Democrats, and vice-versa. Committee members may be thinking about their reputational risk, but there’s only three weeks until a solution is needed, which doesn’t leave enough time. What’s more, the [...]

House Democrats Sharply Critical of Super Committee Grand Bargain Offer

By: Thursday October 27, 2011 7:36 am

The Democratic offer of a “grand bargain” on the deficit, including Medicare benefit reductions, was soundly rejected yesterday by Republicans. The GOP members of the catfood commission offered their own plan, which predictably consisted of all spending cuts. We’re on a path to gridlock, because Republicans just won’t agree to tax increases. However, the points [...]

Obama Deficit Plan Won’t Include Social Security Changes, Reports Say

By: Thursday September 15, 2011 6:21 am

Both the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal report that President Obama’s proposal for deficit reduction, due out Monday, will not include any changes to Social Security. The reports are less certain about increasing the Medicare eligibility age, giving a definite “maybe” about that measure. Here’s a sample of the WaPo report: People close [...]

More Trial Balloons on Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security Cuts from Obama

By: Wednesday September 14, 2011 1:41 pm

We’re just going to get trial balloon after trial balloon until next Monday, when the President is set to announce his batch of deficit reduction ideas for the Catfood Commission II. Now the balloon has flown all the way to England, and the offices of the Financial Times: Barack Obama is expected to lay out [...]

Obama Lets Slip Plans for Chained CPI

By: Friday August 19, 2011 11:34 am

Jon Walker already mentioned this push by President Obama for changes to Medicare and Social Security in his town hall meetings in rural areas this week. It’s actually worse than that. Walker highlighted comments from the stump speech. Look closer at the question and answer session. Twice this week, the President was asked specifically about [...]

Pelosi, Reid Talking Big About Revenues, Protecting Safety Net on Catfood Commission II

By: Tuesday August 2, 2011 2:02 pm

Both Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are making some bold predictions about the Catfood Commission II and their roles in it. Pelosi said she wouldn’t appoint anyone to the committee who didn’t oppose benefit cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. And Reid tried his own dollar-for-dollar pledge by stating there must be a 1:1 [...]

Coburn Returned to Gang of Six After Agreement on Health Care Cuts

By: Thursday July 21, 2011 6:55 am

Just about the only specific piece of the Gang of Six proposal, as explained well by Rep. Peter DeFazio above, is the move to chained CPI, a benefit cut for Social Security, veteran’s benefits and any program with a cost of living adjustment, along with a regressive tax cut. So that should give you a [...]
