Oblivious GOP Filibuster Threat Gave Democrats Last Shot At Gun Control

By: Wednesday April 10, 2013 11:33 am

Just when you thought the momentum for gun control was exhausted, the GOP may have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Despite the public attention and support gun control received in the wake of the tragedy at Newtown, Connecticut, both houses of Congress have been less than sanguine to initiate new gun control legislation. [...]

School Employee Accidentally Shot During District-Sponsored Gun Training

By: Friday March 1, 2013 6:41 am

It seems the more schools take up the NRA’s advice to arm teachers and other school employees the more unsafe the school becomes. First it was a firearms instructor leaving his gun in the student’s bathroom and now a school employee has been accidentally shot while preparing to implement the NRA’s solution to school shootings. [...]

Despite NRA’s Urging Survey Shows Teachers Oppose More Guns In Classroom

By: Tuesday February 26, 2013 7:36 am

NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre’s response to the Newtown school shooting was a plan to bring more guns into schools claiming only a good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun. The plan was met with a mix of ridicule and skepticism but the NRA doubled down on the plan even [...]

The day after President Obama signed 23 executive actions on gun control the President of the NRA David Keene has publicly stated the NRA supports stronger background checks. By: Wednesday January 2, 2013 10:38 am

The Department Of Homeland Security in Alabama has released a video on responding to a mass shooting. The video called Run, Hide, Fight has some interesting instructions: Occasionally life feels more like an action movie than reality… There a three things you could do to make a difference: run, hide, fight… Always try to escape [...]

Godfather of Tea Party Slams NRA School Safety Plan

By: Tuesday December 25, 2012 5:59 am

Trouble in paradise. Outgoing Texas Congressman Ron Paul, often described as the Godfather of the Tea Party, attacked the NRA’s school safety plan. In a statement on his website Paul condemned the NRA’s endorsement of Big Government policies: The political right, unfortunately, has fallen into the same trap in its calls for quick legislative solutions [...]

NRA’s LaPierre Calls for Armed Guards in Schools – You Know, Like at Columbine

By: Friday December 21, 2012 10:45 am

In a bizarre press conference, NRA Chairman Wayne LaPierre called for the immediate placement of armed guards in all public schools. This is classic “fighting the last war” thinking, along with a dash of “think of the children” policymaking. Just quickly, because you shouldn’t even dignify this with much of a response. One, it would [...]

Michigan Governor Snyder Vetoes Concealed Carry in Public Schools Bill

By: Tuesday December 18, 2012 1:40 pm

Embattled Michigan Governor Rick Snyder vetoed ill-timed legislation that would have allowed experienced gun owners to carry concealed weapons in public schools. This is among the first tangible impacts of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. The bill was delivered to Snyder’s desk early Tuesday afternoon and he vetoed it [...]

As Gun Safety Debate Heats Up, Danger in Trying to Solve Wrong Problem

By: Tuesday December 18, 2012 8:20 am

Before this fight gets waged, however, there has to be some understanding of what problem needs to be solved. I completely agree with Mark Kleiman that asking “how do we stop the type of shootings we saw in Newtown” risks solving the wrong problem. The gun safety debate should not just focus on protecting children, and it may not be accurate to tailor policies toward preventing mass shootings. There are certainly things we can do to curtail the 9,000-odd homicides with guns used each year, but they may not be applicable to the case of the young, mostly white, often mentally disturbed individuals who commit mass murder, often out of a need for attention, which is then lavished upon them by the news media.

Gun Safety Should Not Just Be Directed At Protecting Children

By: Monday December 17, 2012 7:45 am

This to me is a key part of the President’s remarks at last night’s vigil in Newtown, Connecticut: This is our first task — caring for our children. It’s our first job. If we don’t get that right, we don’t get anything right. That’s how, as a society, we will be judged. And by that [...]
