The right has been running with this report from the Syracuse Post-Standard showing that Doug Hoffman has been gaining in the recanvassing process in his race against Rep. Bill Owens in NY-23. Democratic Rep. Bill Owens was quickly sworn into office on Friday, a day before the rare weekend vote in the House of Representatives. [...]

Two More Health Care Supporters In Congress Means The Death Of Health Care Reform |
| By: David Dayen Wednesday November 4, 2009 11:04 am |
I’ve been saying this since last night, and now Brian Beutler has picked it up, but the media has decided to run with the “health care reform is doomed” message, when the fact of the matter is that, in the two races where people will vote on health care is concerned, the supporters of reform [...]
The Narrative Is That There Is No Narrative |
| By: David Dayen Wednesday November 4, 2009 7:08 am |
So, you might have noticed that I took an interest in the elections last night. The scoreboard was that Democrats lost the Governor’s races in New Jersey and Virginia, won a nice pickup in NY-23 where they hdn’t been in office since 1871 and took a seat in CA-10 with an ideological shift toward a [...]
Election Night Thread #4 |
| By: David Dayen Tuesday November 3, 2009 7:46 pm |
Sorry, I’m on the radio right now. More updates at the top of the hour. But Bill Owens looks pretty good to win that seat in NY-23, making him potentially the first Democrat representing that area since Reconstruction. …The Mayor of Watertown, who endorsed Hoffman, says, “it’s over.” Surprises all over the map tonight. Meanwhile, [...]

The only call we have is in VA-Gov; Bob McDonnell (R) has won. NJ-Gov (29% reporting): Christie 50% Corzine 43% Daggett 5% Very low numbers for Daggett. He didn’t hold his voters. Maine Question 1 (5% reporting): No 54.48% Yes 45.52% NY-23: no returns yet, but the polls have closed. CA-10: polls close at 11PM [...]
Election Night Thread #2 |
| By: David Dayen Tuesday November 3, 2009 5:00 pm |
Polls close at this hour in New Jersey and Maine. Leaked exit polls show New Jersey to be basically a tie, FWIW. There are no exit polls out of Maine. Virginia remains too early to call, which shocks me. The networks are being ultra-cautious. The latest numbers: 26.19% reporting McDonnell (R) 62.86% Deeds (D) 37.03% [...]

The polls close in Virginia at 7:00 ET. The reports show light turnout, seen as a boost for Bob McDonnell, who doesn’t really need a boost. I’d expect a call on this race within minutes of the polls closing. Actual results can be found here. NBC News has released some exit poll information: Obama’s approval [...]
NY-23: Hoffman Supporter Says “I’m From The Violent Side” |
| By: David Dayen Tuesday November 3, 2009 12:54 pm |
Pretty much all you need to know about the wing of the party Doug Hoffman and conservative activists are fully embracing today. From the indispensable Dave Weigel: “I was at the tea party, but see, I don’t, this is a bit too slow of a process for me. I’m more on violent side. I’m more [...]
Turning Ugly In NY-23: Teabagger Voter Intimidation Reported |
| By: David Dayen Tuesday November 3, 2009 10:40 am |
Via John Amato, the teabagger activists in NY-23 are illegally intimidating local residents at the polls. I just got off the phone with former state Democratic Chairwoman June O’Neill, who informed me the police had been called to at least two polling sites in St. Lawrence County due to overzealous electioneering (O’Neill called it “voter [...]
Teabagger World Domination Plan Set – Charlie Crist, Look Out |
| By: David Dayen Tuesday November 3, 2009 6:44 am |
There’s going to be a lot of talk about winners and losers in the media this week after today’s elections. Before knowing the outcome, I think it’s clear who one loser is – Florida Governor Charlie Crist. The success of the conservative movement in driving out a moderate Republican in NY-23 will embolden that same [...]
NY-23: Scozzafava Robocalling For Owens |
| By: David Dayen Monday November 2, 2009 1:26 pm |
Who would have thought this possible a couple weeks ago: Republican Dede Scozzafava is now making robocalls on behalf of Democrat Bill Owens in the contested NY-23 race in upstate New York. Here’s the transcript: “Hi, this is Dede Scozzafava calling on behalf of Bill Owens. And I wanted to let you know that I [...]
